    JDV assails KAMPI's selfish antics

    By Jess Diaz

Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. chided the Kabalikat ng Malayagn Pilipino (KAMPI) for its alleged selfishness.

"It's premature and selfish. We are in a middle of a national senatorial campaign. We should focus on that," he said.

He was reacting to the declaration of Kampi that it would field its president Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Villafuerte, to challenge de Venecia for the House Speaker's post when the 14th Congress convenes in July.
    .....
House Majority Leader Prospero Nograles, who is Lakas chairman for Davao City, accused Kampi of "dividing and conquering" Lakas.

However, he told Kampi leaders that "this strategy of divide and conquer won't work."

Nograles, said both Lakas and Kampi realize that they have to unite against the opposition in the senatorial, congressional and local elections in May.

Rift in ruling coalition grows; Lakas bets jump
    03/06/2007 | 11:18 PM

Email this | Email the Editor | Print | Digg this | Add to del.icio.us A growing rift within the ruling Lakas-Christian-Muslim Democrats-Kabalikat ng Mamayang Pilipino has widened as a number of Lakas-CMD members scramble to join President Arroyo’s Kampi party. Members of the coalition are also elbowing each other for the President’s endorsement in the coming elections.

Kampi made a show of force on Tuesday as it swore in 200 new members, including Batangas Gov. Armand Sanchez, a member of the Liberal Party-Atienza wing, at the Kampi headquarter in Makati City.

Sanchez’s move puts him in a contest with Lipa City Mayor Vilma Santos for the ruling coalition’s endorsement as official candidate for the gubernatorial race in Batangas. Santos on Monday said she would run, preferably for governor, in May.

Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr, Lakas president, refused to comment about the perceived stampede by Lakas-CMD members to join Kampi. “I don’t want to speak about this because we’re here to wage a successful a national campaign for the country, not for ourselves. That’s selfish," he said.

Last month, Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia bolted Lakas and sought an alliance with Kampi, while Bulacan Gov. Josie dela Cruz also left Lakas and sought Kampi’s endorsement.

Kampi officials seemed to be enjoying the turn of events. Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, Kampi’s former president, said they wanted to make Kampi the biggest in the country.

Luis Villafuerte, Kampi’s newly installed president, declared last month his party is no longer willing to be a “junior partner" of Lakas, adding that it “should be treated pari passu" — equally — in the 14th Congress.

In the 1998 presidential election, Kampi coalesced with Lakas-CMD after Mrs Arroyo agreed to be de Venecia’s running mate. Kampi has now 80 representatives in Congress, 17 incumbent governors and 650 mayors.

The Lakas-CMD coalition, which was established in December 1991 for the presidential bid of Fidel Ramos, is the country’s biggest political grouping. It has 84 representatives in Congress, 46 governors, 62 city mayors, 948 municipal mayors, and as many vice governors and vice mayors. The coalition is fielding some 10,000 candidates in the national and local elections in May.

Montano leaving Team Unity because campaign funds not delivered?
    By Delon Porcalla
    The Philippine Star 03/13/2007

TAGBILARAN CITY, Bohol – As persistent rumors have it, actor-director Cesar Montano is reportedly contemplating on pulling out as senatorial candidate of President Arroyo’s Team Unity due to the failure of Malacañang to make true its P200-million campaign fund promise.

A very reliable source revealed that a Cabinet member, who takes charge of distributing campaign kitties of national and local candidates, has been withholding the amount, jeopardizing the actor’s candidacy, who was the last to declare his bid among his colleagues.

He added Montano might even run for governor of this province instead, being a native of Baclayon town.

"The campaign team of Montano is running dry and it is like a car running out of gas," the source said, referring to serious financial difficulties facing Montano, who admitted having difficulties in the campaign, without any headquarters and political advertisements, among others.

Please ihatag ang bahin ni Montano. Pastilan inyong kauban, ibulsa pa man gyud nin ang kwarta.

Misuari to boost sagging chances of TEAM Unity in Mindanao

COTABATO CITY, Philippines -- Detained Moro leader Nur Misuari will soon be freed to help boost the sagging election chances of the TEAM Unity in the south, his lawyers have claimed.

The administration senatorial bets are having difficulties wooing voters to choose them instead of those running under the Genuine Opposition.

Recent surveys showed that GO senatorial candidates are leading in many parts of the country.

Sumdad Dalidig and Art Lim said the Arroyo government believed that Misuari could help in its political push and peace efforts in Mindanao.

Misuari, former governor of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), is considered one of the most influential Moro leaders.

He was charged with rebellion for allegedly leading the 2001 uprising of the MNLF in Sulu -- five years after the rebel group signed a peace pact with the government -- which left dozens of people dead.

Despite being held in a police facility in Sta. Rosa, Laguna, the government allowed Misuari to leave his detention cell on several occasions.

TEAM Unity townhall meetings to be modified--party execs

    For ‘bigger impact,’ they say

Last updated 04:30pm (Mla time) 03/13/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- The townhall meetings of TEAM Unity senatorial candidates will be modified for “bigger impact,” party officials said Tuesday.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said that starting next week, they would try a new strategy in which all 12 candidates would be present in one province and then spread out to conduct the “Pulong Sulong.”

"There's bigger impact if they're together," said Durano.

Reli German, TEAM Unity’s campaign manager, said the new set-up was one of the options being studied to improve campaign strategy.

Bigger impact? Ingna lang gyud palpak inyo rally, way manga attend. While ang opposition gihulmigas ilang rally, ang inyo gilangaw. Bawion na lang sa confetti ug music. Pag rally mo sa plaza, ayaw sa Conference room. Mauwaw mo no walay manambong sa inyop rally.

t’s Angara’s turn to gripe: Team Unity sked in disarray

    By Cynthia Balana

TACLOBAN CITY—Despite the vaunted resources at its disposal, grumbling from its senatorial candidates is taking its toll on Team Unity’s campaign.

First, actor Cesar Montano had complained about the lack of financial support to run his campaign. He was followed by Sultan Jamalul Kiram who cited the same problem.

Yesterday, reelectionist Sen. Edgardo Angara flared up because of what he described as a “logistical horror” in their campaign sorties.

Angara, team leader of five Team Unity senatorial candidates who arrived here Thursday to campaign, said the Leyte campaign schedules were in disarray.

With Angara were fellow reelectionist Senators Joker Arroyo and Ralph Recto, former Presidential Chief of Staff Mike Defensor and Ilocos Sur Gov. Luis “Chavit” Singson.

Angara said those handling their sorties in Leyte probably “did not pass a course in geography.”

The team campaigned for two days in Tacloban City, one day in Ormoc City and was then asked to join other Team Unity candidates in Iloilo City on Sunday afternoon.

He said Samar should have been included on their schedule since it is connected to Tacloban City by the San Juanico Bridge.

“Andito na tayo sa Leyte bakit hindi tayo pumunta sa Samar, eh napakalapit niyan. Tapos doon pa sa Ormoc, tapos lipad pa sa Iloilo, ano yan cross country? (We were already in Leyte, why didn’t we go to Samar which is very near. Then we went to Ormoc before flying to Iloilo. What’s this, a cross-country trips?)” he told reporters here.

“That’s a logistical horror. That’s crazy. Look, there’s no direct flight from Ormoc to Iloilo. Either you go and take a ferry to Cebu and then take a flight from Cebu to Iloilo. Biro mo yan or bumalik ka sa Manila (Imagine that. You could go back to Manila.) So you already lose one day,” he said.

Angara also learned Recto and Arroyo flew to Davao on Friday to attend the 70th Araw ng Dabaw Fiesta which was not on the official schedule.

“It might appear that we’re disrespecting our host here,” he said in Filipino.

Asked if he was withdrawing from Team Unity as a result of this, Angara replied: “Hindi naman (Not really). I’m only after efficiency because time is of the essence. Tacloban and Samar are connected by San Juanico so why didn’t we proceed to Samar? I think we’re wasting our time and opportunity. The one who handled it probably didn’t pass Geography.

On Friday, Singson left Tacloban for Vigan to host Team Unity senatorial bets who proceeded to Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.
