Ronato "The Volcano" Alcano erupted anew for an 11-8 win against countryman Dennis Orcollo and took home top honors at the World 8-Ball Championship in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the Gulf News website reported.
The online report said Alcano raced to a 7-2 lead over Orcollo, who was described as "more pensive" and "given very few opportunities by a slick Alcano" in the fifth and final game of the championship round.
However, Orcollo managed to win the next three games and eventually sliced the lead down to one rack, 8-7.
Alcano, the current World 9-Ball champion, then regained his composure and closed out Orcullo to bring home the trophy and the $25,000-pot (worth about P1.2 million).
"I'm really happy to win here on my first participation especially coming on the back of winning the world title in the 9-ball equivalent," Gulf News quoted Alcano as saying.
The report said that "a large Filipino crowd" showed up to watch the Alcano-Orcullo duel.
Last November, Alcano handed Ralf Souquet, a top-seeded former champion from Germany, a humbling 17-11 defeat during the championship match of the 2006 World Pool Championships.
The Filipino champ became the second billards player to receive the accolade, with Efren "Bata" Reyes as the first honoree. Blessings have continued to pour for Alcano since then.
On top of hefty endorsement deals, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo confered upon Alcano the honor of Order of Lakandula with the Rank of Champion for Life and a P1-million reward.
