Bautista gets big break
AFTER his third round knockout win over Marino Montiel Gonzales last Saturday, the new WBO Inter-Continental and WBO youth super bantamweight champion Rey “Boom-Boom” Bautista is set to fight under the Oscar De La Hoya vs. Floyd Mayweather Jr. WBC Jr. middleweight championship on May 5 at the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.
The card will also mark AJ “Bazooka” Banal’s debut in the US against a still to be announced opponent.
Making this development more interesting is that Bautista might get the chance to see action in the main supporting event to the much-awaited clash of boxing titans in dela Hoya and Mayweather.
Bautista, the WBO No.1 super-bantamweight contender, will fight No.2 ranked Argentinean Sergio Manuel Medina in an 12-round eliminator bout.
“We just finalized the plans with Eric (Gomez, Golden Boy Promotions vice president), while he was talking with Richard (Schaefer, GBP CEO) and Oscar (dela Hoya, GBP President). Boom-Boom will be one of the three bouts to be shown world wide,” said ALA Boys manager Michael Aldeguer.
According to the younger Aldeguer, Banal’s fight will be held before the three bouts that will be shown around the globe.
“Boom-Boom might have the chance to be the main supporting (fight) to dela Hoya-Mayweather,” added Aldeguer.
The Bautista-Medina fight is a battle of undefeated fighters since Bautista, who holds a 22-0 (17 KOs) record will be up against the 28-0 (16KOs) record of Medina.
Meanwhile, Team Bautista is also considering to train along with De La Hoya in Puerto Rico.
ALA Boys chief trainer Edito Villamor told Sun.Star Cebu that they are now working on plans to train in Puerto Rico.
“Since Freddie (Roach) will be there to train dela Hoya, we might as well hitch along,” said Villamor.
Team Bautista targets the second week of March to start their training and if given the chance, the Boholano sensation will be training along with his promoter, dela Hoya. (RCM)
