    Default Advice for telephoto lens

    Hi istoryans!

I'm planning to buy my first pair of extra lens this weekend. I own a Canon kissx4 (550D) and have the 18-55 kit lens to match but I want to be able to take pictures from a distance. Unfortunately, as I am only a student and freelancer (not a freelance photographer, I'm more of a hobbyist), my budget is quite low. But I'd like some advice on what telephoto lens to get for 10K and below.

Oh, and I'm mostly into short film as well, so something that's useful for these types of uses....shooting from a distance and shooting short films....would be awesome. Thanks!

Canon EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III Telephoto Zoom Lens is a good choice but if you can find a 70-200mm F4 second hand much better.

for that price get the Canon EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS, it pickup where the kit lens stopped, but if you have budget follow what alucard_x said... dont get the Sigma 18-200mm very slow AF... i had bad experience sa iyaha ka hinay...

Thanks for the advice guys! I was going to buy a 3 week old 70-300mm sigma lens but thought I'd ask from the more experienced peeps here in istorya like you guys. Thanks a bunch!

now I'll just have to deal with the fact that I can't post an ad in the buy and sell forum here in istorya :P

Sakit mo lang :P Kapalit na kog 60D kit ana huhu hinay hinay lang sa ko hehehe

My problem is that Sigma is of course, a 3rd party lens. I might upgrade my canon one day and dili nako mapuslan ang 3rd party.

I've been offered a 55-250mm and a 75-300mm USM. From what I researched, 55-250mm seems to be the better choice especially when it came to image quality and stability. Any comment?

imo: never the third party lens if ur getting a tele. little does the trick, tigum ra gud. mas daghan benefits if u keep what u have now, and enjoy what ul get in the future when u obtain the 70-200. either f4 or 2.8.

just make sure it's the DG APO Macro Telefoto and NOT just the DG ones - kai hinay nah ang focus sa DG nga version mas bag.o ang APO version. i think sa Nikkon version is Motorized.

i have the DG version sa Canon, gt it over a year so i learned to use it well bisan naa cyay mga flaws like don't go beyond 200mm kai soft na kau kng kinanglan gyd nmo ang 200-300 nga range better nga naay support like using Monopod/Tripod.

overall still a good lens though "kng maanad na ka" with so much Post Processing

if you're getting the Canon 70-200mm ang f4 non IS is the cheapest. i think twice the price of that Sigma 70-300 DG. goodluck

Yeah, I've been reading up on 3rd party lenses and I agree with you. If I upgrade, sayang na lang ang lens :P

The cheapest offer for 70-200 that I saw here is waaaaay beyond my budget range, sadly.

Do you think a 55-250mm will work nicely for starters? I'm also planning to buy a tripod by the way.
