anyone remember/know alice in chains? you know, the guys who came out in the '90s during the grunge era with a much different, metal-laced sound, with a frontman who OD'd on speedball...? yeah, them.
famous then were kurt cobain, eddie vedder, chris cornell, and their bands. there was a fourth voice. the most soulful of the era. it was layne staley.
actually, i only took a serious interest fairly recently. and since then, i've been hooked. layne staley has got this amazing vocal range that would shame adam lambert or any other Idol any day (i don't even want to put staley's name next to these "balladeers"). on top of that, layne staley is so daym beautiful! it's such a real shame he passed on in the way that he did.
these days, i often blast their songs as loud as my lousy speakers can, just listening to layne staley. their lead, jerry cantrell, isn't bad either. not bad at all. and you know what, unlike some frontmen, say, pantera's (i forget his name) or chino moreno, layne staley sang just as beautiful live. perhaps even more expressively. i crap you not.
there's nothing i can do about it, but i feel bad i wasn't born during their time. when layne was still in control of himself, of his life. but, the rumors maintain, he gave up the will to live when the love of his life died. they weren't together anymore, but still. and i worship at his altar all the more.
this is him in happier, healthier times.
