Default Is Free Will an Illusion? Scientists, Philosophers Forced to Differ...

Are you really in control, or is your every decision predetermined? Who's at the steering wheel: you, your genes, your upbringing, fate, karma, God?

A hot topic for several thousand years, the question of whether free will exists may never be settled to everyone's satisfaction. But in a series of new articles for the Chronicles of Higher Education, six academics from diverse fields offer fresh perspectives from the standpoints of modern neuroscience and philosophy. Ultimately, they voted 4-2 in favor of the position that free will is merely an illusion.

for me free will exists but is limited. I always think of it this way. You are given 10 doors to choose and you are free to choose. So you are free but with limitation. You are only FREE to choose among the 10 doors. IMO

Before, when you got a sore throat or an ear infection, or a simple cut on your finger, you had two doors to choose from:

    a) You either survived with some post-illness malady or condition (i.e. other illnesses resulting from complications of the first one)

    b) You died.

Alexander Fleming discovered a third door--penicillin.

Therefore, sometimes, when you see only 10 doors, it's good to have an axe handy, to create an 11th door.
