It appears as if Commodore USA is milking its brand names for as much as it can and the company has now launched its first Amiga branded product, the Amiga mini. It's a pretty decent looking mini-ITX system in what appears to be a custom made aluminium chassis, but we'd say that the company is pinning its nostalgic buyers hope a little bit too high.The Amiga mini chassis has an engraved Amiga logo on the front with a Commodore logo on the top, as well as a Commodore logo on the front and that's about as much Amiga that there is to be had. In fact, the company has done very little with the system as it sports a Zotac Z68-ITX WiFi Supreme motherboard with an on board GeForce GT 430 GPU which is paired up with 1GB of DDR3 memory. To the board, Commodore USA has added a Core i7-2700K CPU, 16GB of DDR3 1333MHz memory, a 1TB 2.5-inch hard drive and a Blu-ray drive.
Commodore USA has also launched the VIC mini which has an identical chassis minus the Amiga logo. Internally we're looking at the Zotac D2700-ITX WiFi Supreme motherboard that features an Atom D2700 processors paired with a GeForce GT 520 with 512MB of DDR3 memory. In this case you only get 4GB of DDR3 1066MHz memory due to limitations of the CPU, but the two systems are otherwise the same beyond the motherboard specific features.Both models are available in silver or black and you can buy either as a barebone, although in this case we're talking about a chassis and the Blu-ray drive for a fairly steep US$345 (S$435). If you thought that was bad, then wait until you here the price of the actual systems. The VIC mini comes in at US$995 (S$1,259), although that also gets you a copy of Commodore USA's free Commodore OS Vision pre-installed as well as a pair of restore discs.
The Amiga mini is a breath taking US$2,495 (S$3,155) making it an insane purchase considering you put together something similar for far less money. Oh and Commodore USA is also offering SSD upgrades for both models at US$495 for 300Gb [sic] and US$995 for 600Gb [sic]. We're fairly certain that Commodore USA won't be seeing too many orders for either system, but maybe there are a few nostalgic people out there willing to pay the price.Source: Commodore USA
