Default Cooler Master unveils the Silencio 650 at CeBIT

Besides an onslaught of new motherboards, the other big thing at CeBIT this year appears to be new chassis. Cooler Master had a few new models on display – of which a few were current models in new colours – but one that caught our eye was the Siliencio 650 which has some rather interesting features of which one is unique to this case as far as we're aware.
Unlike the previous Silencio models, the 650 doesn't have any padding at the rear of the door, instead Cooler Master has swapped the plastic door for a solid slab of aluminium which should help reduce the noise to a degree. Behind the door is a pair of 5.25-inch drive bays, a hot-swappable bay and an easily removable fan filter which hides a pair of 120mm fans.
Whoever built the demo system didn't seem to be aware of a product called cable ties, but disregarding the rats nest inside the Silencio 650 we have a typical Cooler Master design with two separate drive cages of which one can be removed to allow for longer graphics cards. Due to the fact that someone had attached a plate from what appears to be an AMD motherboard, we're not entirely sure how many drive bays are on offer and it almost appears as if Cooler Master was trying to hide something here.
Overall the internal design is pretty much what we've come to expect from Cooler Master with a 7+1 rear slot layout, a single rear 120mm fan and a bottom mounted PSU. The interesting stuff as well as one real head scratcher takes place on the top of the chassis. Underneath a sliding cover, Cooler Master has fitted two USB 2.0 and two USB 3.0 ports as well as a pair of audio jacks and an SD cards slot and of course the power and reset buttons, so nothing really out of the ordinary here, but we do like the inclusion of the SD card reader which seems to become increasingly common on new chassis from Cooler Master.
If you look just below the USB 3.0 ports you'll see two slides, the one to the left controls the fan speed and again isn't anything really unusual, but the second switch had a lot of people guessing. Yours truly on the other hand figured it out within seconds. What you're looking it as a boot drive selector via a hardware switch. Normally you'd have to go into the BIOS to switch boot drive, but in this case it's just a matter of sliding the switch from one position to the other. It might not be the ideal solution for everyone, but it's a quick and easy way to switch between operating systems.
What we didn't get though was the top mounted air vent, as it appears as if a fan can be mounted here, but for some reason the engineers thought it would be a good idea to add a sliding door here so the air vent could be closed. This makes about as much sense as having a convertible car that you never open the roof on. At least this time around Cooler Master added noise insulating padding to both side panels of the chassis.
Overall the Silencio 650 looks like a decent case and it's worth keeping in mind that model on display at CeBIT was a prototype and not the final product. It's also good to see that there are still some companies that bother making cases for those that wants something that blocks out at least some of the noise that computers can produce. Sadly we can't tell you when the Silencio 650 will be available, nor were we given an indication on pricing.
