    Default IDPA or IPSC?

i'm one heck of a bug! i've just been to the Filipino Martial Arts discussion, guitar forums, etc. now I'm here!

In 1989, practical shooting in the country was only seven years old. the pistol of choice were mostly single stack 1911 .45s because it passed the power factor test. when the "arms race" starting the years 1991 onwards included high capacity 1911s using STI, Para Ordnance frames used "wildcat" super .38's ammo (thanks to Rob Leatham), IPSC style practical shooting became a sport for the latest gizmos and gamesmanship. Thus practical shooting became a misnomer... and that is why the former founding fathers of IPSC led by pistolsmith Bill Wilson, Ken Hackathorn, Jeff Cooper, etc. dropped out of IPSC and organized the IDPA (International Defensive Pistol Association).

That was also the time I left PPSA because I could no longer afford the "arms race" and sport veered away from its combative origins. In the interim I focused on underground CQB with some military and paramilitary contacts that incorporated crosstraining in eskrima. Personally, it was a matter of survival as I was covering Lanao del Norte, Zamboanga, Sulu and Cotabato provinces during the years 1991 to 2002 and close calls were not uncommon. No need to elaborate further!

If there is an IDPA group in Cebu, I'd be very happy to hear about it!

Thanks antoy for sharing some info. I am just a newbie and just bought my first semi-auto pistol which is locally made (SAM Commodore from shooters). It is a single stack cal..45 1911 pistol.

Actually bought it for home defense purpose only. Since i already got the said boomer, i (& my wife) should learn how to use it. That's why i've been trying to ask for some inputs & ideas in this forum.

I think joining a gun club is the best thing to do first to learn how to use the said firearm. Then if budget permits, i might go on to competitions in the near future and save some dough to buy those race guns you had mentioned.

mikol: Karlon is a good friend of mine. in fact, we went took the R.O. exam together.

going into competition is no easy task. economy of movements, strategies and stepping are but some of the factors you'll have to take into consideration during competition. been out of the circuit for a while to pursue other passions but i am planning to go back soon.

Sakto ka bai, also a sense of rhytmn and timing is important in practical shooting, since it's freestyle, you should consider setting up a rhytmn for PLAN B, if you fumble on PLAN A. This is the most common error during competition. I've seen a lot of good shooters mess up their run, when they miss a few rounds in a Comstock scored event.

Although I cannot speak for the other clubs in Cebu, that I assume are too elitist, for us guys shooting on a budget, I would suggest you join Kamagong Gun club. I have friends here with no bloated egos and they're more than willing to assist you. I'm not a member of Kamagong, I've had two previous memberships in local clubs in North Mindanao.

good luck and don't forget those thousands of dry fires and most of all KEEP IT SAFE AT ALL TIMES! CHEERS!

Thanks for the offer! I'd send you a pm when I can scrimp for a budget! Maka-konsensiya man gud usahay ang shooting! Everytime you fire a shot, that's the equivalent of one hollow block. siguro nakapa tukod na ko ug music room with all those shots I fired in the range. ha, ha, ha, but the adrenaline rush and the pleasures of shooting, if you practice within your budget far outweighs the costs. Lingaw kaayo! I wish I could shoot again in the coming months, naa pa lay laing projects! Thanks and warm regards!

    antoy,
