Governors and business leaders in the Visayas will meet today to map out contingency measures, including the possible creation of the Republic of the Visayas, once President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is forcibly taken out of Malacañang.
Governor Gwendolyn Garcia, who will host the meeting at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel, said she expects a good attendance during the gathering.
Garcia said that based on the confirmation she received, only one of the 16 governors in the Visayas will not attend the meeting. She, however, did not give the name of the governor, only saying that he is from Region 8.
The governor said among the possible directions that they are pursuing should the President is ousted is the creation of the Visayas Republic. But she did not make a categorical stand on the proposed republic as she only said, “we are self-sufficient here.â€
Garcia explained that “with the help of the other provinces in the Visayas, we can pretty well survive on our own,†saying that Cebu has already an international airport and seaport.
Bohol Governor Erico Aumentado, who heads the League of Governors in the Philippines and Union of Local Authorities in the Philippines, first floated the idea to create the Visayas Republic because of the mounting protests in Manila against the Arroyo administration.
Aumentado, a staunch Arroyo supporter, said that Visayas could stand on its own because of its rich resources.
