if Windows 7 ang OS okay ra, uninstall old hardware drivers then install the new ones. did that from my LGA775 to P67 platform.

if not ang Vista and 7 na man na paage kung mag install fresh OS nga e butang imo files sa Windows.old directory. intact lang gihapon imo important files unless you did a reformat on same partition.

It's always better to do a fresh install when doing major hardware change i.e. motherboards.

But if you prefer, there is an alternative method for XP without losing your programs and files: Replace Motherboard on a Windows XP System

Please read the guide carefully. Follow the instructions and you should be well.

Do you have access to another desktop? To slave, just connect the hard drive to another desktop (w/ working OS). Boot up, and backup your files.

Also, backup your data before attempting the guide I gave you as a precautionary measure.
