Report: AMD Radeon HD 7000M to launch in December by VR-Zone.com
The long rumoured AMD London series is finally set to make its debut as the Radeon HD 7000M series product for notebooks in December, following NVIDIA's GeForce 600M launch. While an exact release date or architecture information is missing, Computerbase.de has listed a number of SKUs, covering entry-level HD 7430M all the way to high-end HD 7900M.
With the onslaught of APUs/Procesor Graphics, many expected the entry-level discrete GPU to die with 40nm. That is partially true - while AMD will continue to offer entry-level discrete GPUs for notebooks, they will be nothing buy souped up rebrands of the HD 6400M series, covering the HD 7400M series.
The entire mainstream will be covered by the Thames GPU, covering HD 7500M and HD 7600M series. There are some significant inconsistencies with the branding reported by Computerbase, however, e.g. Thames LE clocked at 450 MHz with DDR3 featuring a higher branding (HD 7610M) than Thames Pro clocked at 600 MHz (HD 7590M) with GDDR5 so we must take this preliminary information with a grain of salt. Curiously, the Thames line-up is so choc-a-bloc it leaves no room for Trinity APUs.
Moving up the chain, we have the Chelsea GPU, to be branded HD 7700M, followed by the high-end Heathrow, HD 7800M and the entusiast Wimbledown, featuring a 256-bit memory interface, the HD 7900M series.
Except Seymour, all the other HD 7000M GPUs are expected to be 28nm fabbed. However, details such as the architecture used remain unknown.
Following a similar timeline to the GeForce 600M series, a launch in December means notebooks based on the HD 7000M series (and GeForce 600M) will be expected to hit retail in Q1 2012 with some design wins surely exhibited at CES 2012.
