AMD's long awaited next-gen 28nm GPU is finally set to release in January 2012, according to a report from Fudzilla. AMD announced during its latest financial conference call that the first next-gen GPUs were to ship by the end of 2011. Whether this shipment was for a Dec 2011 launch or in anticipation of an early 2012 remained a matter of speculation. The first next-gen GPUs to release is reported to be based on the high-performance Tahiti chip.

Tahiti will be the direct successor to Cayman, currently powering AMD Radeon HD 6900 series. As a result, the two Tahiti SKUs are most likely to be branded as AMD Radeon HD 7970 and HD 7950 for the XT and PRO variants respectively. As expected, a dual-GPU variant combining two Tahiti chips will release later in 2012, possibly within Q1 2012. The branding is likely to be Radeon HD 7990. Thanks to TSMC's 32nm cancelation, the 40nm to 28nm transition is a significant full node shrink. Barring any major production troubles, Tahiti will thus end up significantly faster than HD 6970, and not too far away of dual-GPU HD 6990.

NVIDIA's high-performance Kepler GPUs are expected release later in 2012. However, the first next-gen GPU, GK107, might release around the same time as Tahiti.
