coz ofcourse we are less competitive compare to other countries,
for two major reasons;
1.) TOtally dependent on Outsourcing
our IT industry here in the Philippines is just like a 'hired handyman' for projects from other countries. sa Outsourcing ra na buhi ang most sa IT companies dri sa Pinas.
Most popular IT industry the Philippines can offer(for outsourcing) is only Web development, and even Game developers such as Anino games outsourced thier services and with only a few titles released as thier own (isa ra gani as far as i know).
This country has less to offerspecially on RnD, developing new ideas and products,
and releasing a consumer-based-product.
Gamay ra ang RND na mga companies dri (even in cebu maihap ra sa 5 ka tudlo), and most of those companies are from other countries gani (ex. Lexmark). Even IBM's projects were outsourced from US,
not to mention Accenture.
This country never contributes something in IT except as being the hired coders for somebody's projects.
Innovation (virtually) does not exist on this country.
2) IT skill and education.
- This country do have skills in IT.
But those skills are far more elementary than other countries.
India IT engineers are far more skilled and better compare to Filipinos.
I have read in an article that most IT professionals in the Philippines are web developers, with less number of system(FW, OS, Drivers) developers, few framework or API authors, virtually inexistent computer engineers(hardware), a little game and graphics programmers, etc.
And according to a survey, most filipino engineers; even with more than 5 years experience has less understanding on the basic foundation of computer specially on its architecture and software engineering.
(i will post the sources in here in a while)
:: some istoryans even think that C/C++ is not relevant anymore, so that gives us an idea of the mindset of Filipinos when it comes to technology.

Statement No. 1. India also get most of their IT sector in BPO's.
Statement No. 2. are you saying where not as competitive as india because they are better? this is relative. in my experience. this is only 1% True. but my experience only is limited to Software aspect of IT Engineering.
the only thing got going with india is that their labor is much lower than ours.
best thing got going with the countries on top is that they attract foreign talents abroad because of their competitiveness in compensation.
problem with our country is that talented individuals are leaving for better compensation.
i also notice that we got very low scores on IT Infrastructure category and wost part is we got zero in RnD. mainly due to the fact that there is very little or none existent of government support for it. without government support. theres little that our IT Industry can do to move forward or move up for that matter.
ang gobyerno mismo dli interesado sa IT and R&D. im not sure if its even part of its objectives.. wala kaayu investment sa IT sector. Look around, ang NBI nag "back to" manual processing, ang ZTE - NBN na program, wala jud na fix, government offices ga excel or worse, and this list goes on. Ang priority sa gobyerno kai mag gukod sa past admin, aside from that, im not very sure unsa pa. Sayang unta kai i beleive we have the labor force (massive) to compete, pero there isnt enough support.
Lack of Support sa Government dili lang sa IT industries. Example sa agricultural sector pa lang kulelat na ta, mag-import pa gani rice sa lain countries like vietnam, thai, so on... Sa Medical/ healthcare aspect, name it... Yes! we do have talented individuals in different industries but if walay support sa officials, taas, leaders wala gihapon and ofcourse money. I hate to say it but ang booming industry lang diri ang POLITIKA Mao na;
LACK OF SUPPORT
Does Lexmark here even have RnD?
RnD does not have to start in the government. It's true RnD is expensive, not everybody or hell you need groups for it to have a kickstart.
Ang Pilipinas hilig kaayo ug instant. Instant noodles, instant coffee bisag instant panglawas. The rest of the world is already trying to improvise anything instant. Kita, consume pirmi ug instant nya walay panghuna-huna on how to make something instant more innovative.
Like for example, people here want a website. Ang mga developer sad diri sa country, mag-gamit na ug mga pre-made frameworks or CMSs then palit lag instant skin. Instant money na. No thought on innovation, no thought on making your way.
I don't deny I have the same mindset. But I am proud to be somebody who pushes innovation and I am aspiring to work soon in RnD. I download open source projects and modify them on my own. Di magsalig ug premade.
As always the initiative need to start among individuals but if walay initiative/ will sa taas wa gihapon as the article stated, its not only for certain company but as a whole. Budget/ investment is needed here, mao lang if stable na ang economy![]()
I think these are the issues we have:
1. Education
- we need to invest more on our Education System. my college experience was not the best in terms of learning... teacher don't have any industry experience, they teach but do not inspire students. the curriculum is mediocre compare to other schools from other countries.
2. Filipino Culture
- Filipinos are known to be "laid back" investors go to cities/countries that are more efficient.. even if they have to pay more. like Japan, Singapore, Malaysia.
- what I usually hear from Pinoys who have worked on these countries are "Kapoy/Patay ang trabaho".
3. We are continually experiencing Brain Drain.
- good people are leaving the country for a chance of a better future (who wouldn't?).
- Even with these factors, we still have good people who are in the country fighting the battle.
4. Investor Policies
- Foreign Investors are require to have a Filipino counter part.
- There are lots of red tapes when setting up business in the Philippines too.
Lets face it, outsourcing is the trend, even in India or Singapore everything is being outsourced. I see outsourcing good because it redistribute the wealth. the only downside of it is that Americans/Europeans are losing jobs, and the rich getting richer, but at least we get a piece of the pie.
