Philippines delivers 7 billionth baby of the world...
Shortly before midnight yesterday, one of the world’s symbolic 7 billionth babies was born in Manila.
Officials from the Department of Health and the United Nations immediately headed to the Jose Fabella Memorial medical Center after learning of the birth of Danica May Camacho, second daughter of Camille Camacho and Florante Galura of Antipolo City.
However, Health Secretary Enrique Ona said they can only be sure until the World Health Organization receives all application and decides on who the world’s seventh billion baby really is.
Media is yet to report on other babies vying for the title.
UN Population Commission head Tomas Osias was also present, as well as the six billionth baby of the world who is interestingly also Filipino.
Lorrize Mae Guevarra, 12, is now in sixth grade. She was born in 1999 and was declared the world’s six billionth baby. Guevarra said she is very happy to see Danica and she hopes that she would “grow up to become health and well loved by everyone.”
Danica’s mother Camille said of her child, “She looks so lovely. I can’t believe she is the world’s seventh billion.”
The father, who remained watching in a corner as television crew and photographers took pictures and videos of his daughter, later joined the mother and child with a “7B Philippines” cake presented by UN officials.
PH 12th most populous
Given the Philippines’ rank as being the 12th most populous country in the world, it is not that surprising that it would have under its belt the six billionth and now the seven billionth baby in the world.
Secretary Ona said the arrival of the world’s seven billionth baby in the Philippines is an opportunity for the nation to assess population issues.
China is still the top nation with 1.35 billion people, followed by India with 1.24 billion.
UN Population Fund representative Ugochi Daniels said the young Philippine population should be taught “life skills” and about sexual issues, given that many parts of the developing world are plagued with the fact that population growth outpaces economic growth.
