Buying the enclosures separately will enable you to save on costs. There are enclosures for 3.5" and 2.5" hdd's. I used my old PC's hdd with a USB, external powered enclosure (see below, pic #1). I also used an old laptop hard drive along with a 2.5" USB enclosure (bus- or external powered). I suppose the firewire-based devices should be a little bit snappier vs. the USB 1/2 versions.

In the office I have a USB 2.0, RAID (0-1-5; cold-swappable)-enabled SOHO-type external enclosure like the one pictured below (#2; manufactured by Fastora). A solution for SOHO backup redundancy needs. The disks can also be configured as JBOD, so you will end up with three disks up to 900 g total capacity.

CF-based hard drives are also coming along, but still expensive IMHO. I don't have any of these to go with my PDA, but one is pictured below (a magicstor).
