Default Lenovo becomes second largest PC maker, Asus enters fifth place

Lenovo becomes second largest PC maker, Asus enters fifth place by VR-Zone.com

Despite all the concerns about the PC industry and the general downturn once more in the economy, it looks like the PC industry is going strong, well, at least mostly so. According to the latest data from Gartner and IDC, the PC industry grew by between 3.2 and 3.6 percent in the third quarter this year and although this isn't much, we really need to take a closer look at the numbers to see what's going on.

The big changes in the industry involves Lenovo taking over Dell's number two spot and Asus moving up into the top five PC makers, ousting Toshiba. As such HP remains at the top spot, with Dell in third followed by Acer in fourth. But the important thing here is to look at the grown between the third quarter of this year and last year.

Here we see HP with a 5.3 percent growth, slightly better than the average, whereas Lenovo has a massive growth of 36.1 percent with Asus closely behind with a 30.2 percent growth. However, Dell declined by 1.6 percent and in the case of Acer, we see a massive drop of 20.6 percent. This is bad news for Dell, but judging by all of Acers problem this year, it wasn't unexpected that the company would be losing market share, but over 20 percent drop is disastrous.

In terms of actual market share, HP holds 18.1 percent of the market, up from 17.8 percent, Lenovo 13.7 percent, up from 10.4 percent, Dell 12 percent, down from 12.6 percent, Acer 10 percent, down from 13.1 percent and Asus 6.5 percent, up from 5.2 percent. As such there's still a big gap between Acer and Asus and we expect that Toshiba isn't too far behind Asus, although only top five numbers were provided.

In the case of Asus, most of its sales would've been notebook related, as although Asus sell ready built PC's in some regions, the company is a tiny player in the desktop PC market. This also tells us that Asus' notebooks are now more popular than those from Toshiba which must be a big blow for the Japanese company which used to be one of the top notebook manufacturers in the world. Lenovo has most likely gained a lot of market share thanks to its more affordable Ideapad line of notebooks and lower-cost devices in the Chinese market, although its Thinkpad series is still plenty popular with corporate users. HP has had its fair share of troubles this year too, but still managed to do better than Dell which hasn't launched the most inspiring products this year, even though the company has made a lot of noise about its new products that ended up disappointing in the end.
