CEBU CITY (2nd Update, 6:46 p.m.) -- A Cebuana who was accused along with her British boyfriend in the killing of a six-year-old girl in Naga, Cebu was arrested at SM Megamall Friday.

Agents of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) nabbed Bella Ruby Santos, who cut her hair short and had both legs tattooed in an attempt to escape arrest, while shopping at a clothing store at SM Megamall in Ortigas Center, Pasig City, around 4:30 p.m.

"She cut her hair short to change her appearance," lawyer Lauro Reyes, assistant regional director of the NBI in Cebu told Sun.Star in Manila. "She didn't even have any bra on and wore a pair of short shorts."

Santos, when arrested, was accompanied by a woman she supposedly met three days ago and who agreed to let her stay at her apartment on A. Bonifacio Avenue in Quezon City.

Reyes said that lawyer Reynan Oliva of the NBI in Cebu received information at 3 p.m. Friday that Santos was in Megamall.

Oliva, according to Reyes, called up Special Investigator Arnel Pura, also of NBI in Cebu, who happened to be in the vicinity. Pura was in Manila to attend a separate court hearing.

Oliva told Pura, who didn't know what she looked like, that the suspect was wearing a pink shirt and a pair of shorts and had her two legs tattooed that had "vine-like" designs.

Upon receiving the information, Pura told Sun.Star that he confronted the suspect and took pictures of her.

Pura, who uses a Blackberry phone, then sent the pictures through email to various people who may confirm Santos's identity, including Judge Ester Veloso, who was hearing the case.

Pura then brought Santos to the Security Department of SM Megamall. Santos continued to insist that she was Lara Ebba Gonzales of Davao.

However, when she was unable to produce any identification that she was Gonzales, she gave up. Her female companion abandoned her not long after, Pura told Sun.Star.

"Gikapoy na ko sa katatago," Pura told Sun.Star over the phone, quoting Santos.

Santos was then brought to the NBI head office in Manila, where she is currently detained.

Authorities will bring her to Cebu "as early as possible" as soon as they get tickets for a flight, Reyes said.

Santos went into hiding after Regional Trial Court branch 6 Judge Ester Veloso issued last July an arrest warrant against her and her boyfriend Ian Charles Griffiths for the death of Ellah Joy Pique.

Pique was last seen leaving school in Calajoan, Minglanilla, Cebu, last February 8. Her lifeless body was found the next day at the bottom of a cliff near Sayaw Beach in Barili town, more than 40 kilometers away from home.

Police theorize that Santos and Griffiths took the girl to use her in an online *** operation.

Santos denied the allegation and convinced a judge to declare inadmissible most of the items recovered in her house during a legal search.

Judge Veloso, however, issued a warrant of arrest for the couple last July 12, after the Office of the Cebu Provincial Attorney found probable cause to charge them with abduction and murder.

Police attempted to serve the warrant on Santos, who resided in Naga City, but she had disappeared.

Her lawyers, Rameses Villagonzalo and Ana Luz Cristal, earlier said that they don't know her whereabouts.

Police, meanwhile, are seeking the extradition of Griffiths, who was ordered arrested by a British court but was released on bail last April, under an 1861 law that allows Britons accused of murder or manslaughter abroad to be tried at home.

Provincial Prosecutor Jane Petralba earlier confirmed that they've asked the Department of Justice to initiate the process that will bring Griffiths to Philippine soil.

"The request was received by the Office of the Chief State Counsel," Petralba said.

The OCSC is the Philippine Government's "central authority" for extradition and mutual legal assistance requests in cases that don't involve violations of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

Once extradited, Griffiths will be arraigned for the Pique abduction and murder case pending before RTC Judge Veloso. (Sunnex)
