    Default Old Visayan Songs.

    Hi,
I was born in Toronto but my parents are from Cebu. I've fallen in love with old Visayan harana and balitaw. I'm having a very hard time looking for good recordings of Visayan songs. Does anyone know if Pilita Corrales recorded any Visayan albums other than:

    Visayan Love Songs Vol. 1
    Matud Nila
Yukbo Sa Bisayanhong Awit (with Susan Fuentes)
    Pilita Corrales sings Visayan Songs
    Sa Tanang Panahon

Has she ever recorded a Visayan Pasko album or sung Gimingaw Ako or Pobreng Alindahaw? Does anyone know if Sylvia La Torre recorded Visayan songs in VISAYAN as opposed to Tagalog versions of them? Is Villar and Vicor records still making CDs or tapes of their old albums like Tres Rosas: Sa Baybayon?

Why is it that Portuguese fado is thriving and has great success in international, music-savvy audiences and the Portuguese love their old music while Visayans let Harana and balitaw die? Why are they letting die a beautiful and culture-imbued artform?

    Manny.

Yes. . .I've seen that Pilita page on wikipedia. I contributed a few titles to it. It's not a complete list. "Pobreng Alindahaw" is listed there but they got that list from the the Filipino music artists registry:

    http://www.philmusicregistry.net/

And it said that she sung it for GEM recording in 1977. In 1977 she sung "Pobreng Kasintahan" which is the Tagalog version of Pobreng Alindahaw for GEM Recording on the album Maalaala Mo Kaya. I think this refers to Pobreng Kasintahan on Maalaala Mo Kaya unless there is a Visayan Pilita album released in 1977 by GEM Recording which I havent heared about.

As for westernization, the Philippines is a culturally western country for the most part. It's not like we're trying to be western but westernisms are part of what Filipinos do automatically because of Spain and Mexico's colonization of the Philippines. So these songs that I'm looking for are western. They could not conceivably called asian songs because they are of Latin sentiment. But even with all this why is it that Filipinos care less about their old music than the Portuguese, French, Spanish, Greek, Lebanese, Ethipoians, Indians etc etc etc. Is there not commercialism in these countries? When I go to the "world music" section of HMV or Sam the Record Man here in Toronto why is there not a single CD of Filipino music? Filipinos like to listen to ugly saccharine ballads like "Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal". Those songs are by the numbers and trite. I could have composed that song in an hour.

My friend was dating a Filipino who played songs like "Bakit Labis Kitang Mahal" and had a very low opinion of Filipino music until I exposed him to songs like Wasay-Wasay, Ako'y Kampopot and Nganong Mipakita Ka.
