Default Crash course on wireless routers

Hi everyone! I've been reading so much about wireless router et al since I'm planning to set up one at home. I plan to have it connected to my DSL modem and follow the instructions from there. My question is how broad is the range of these wireless routers? One person told me that they are usually "eye range". Does this mean I can't connect to the internet when I'm in the second floor or in another room? I would really appreciate any inputs from the experts here. Thanks everyone!

wireless routers (even consumer end)penetrate easily wooded floors, signal and range is affected with concrete, metal, water etc. but kung second floor lang. im sure, you can still have connection, although line of sight is preferrable, its not a requirment.

i have 2 wrt54g (using dd-wrt) and they do reach good range, a couple of hundred meters kung Line of sight.

The N routers are already available, i have set up them myself and all i can say is great range even at second floor of buildings just dont forget security since your neighbors might pick up ur signal if u brodcast ur network.

One suggestion on strong and simple wifi security - use the MAC ID Whitelist to list only the MAC id's of computers allowed on network.
