Pacquiao-Morales 3 sets HBO pay-per-view record
The third and deciding bout between Manny "The Pacman" Pacquiao and Mexico's boxing idol Erik Morales was the highest-grossing fight in the lighter weight division in Home Box Office's pay-per-view history, ABS-CBN News learned.
HBO's Mark Taffet said the Pacquiao-Morales 3 bout in Las Vegas, Nevada on November 18 generated 350,000 buys, making it the highest grosser in light-weight fights in HBO pay-per-view history.
Taffet said the trilogy of Pacquiao-Morales fights concluded a total of 1,060,000 buys that translates to $49.4 million in pay-per-view revenue.
"We're very pleased with the performance of Pacquiao-Morales 3. It was a very exciting fight for boxing fans. [It] was the highest-grossing fight we've ever had in the lighter weight classes and concluded a memorable trilogy in which over one million buys and nearly $50 million of [pay-per-view] revenue was generated by the two fighters," he said.
"Boxing fans showed great support of the sport in 2006 and we are looking forward to another exciting year in 2007," he added.
Pacquiao knocked down Morales in the last seconds of the third round of the fight, winning the match.
HBO had its highest grossing year in 1999 with four million buys generated from two Oscar dela Hoya fights and the match up between heavyweights Evander Holyfield and Lennox Lewis.
