Default Philippine Dragon Boat team breathes fire, strikes gold

TAMPA, Florida—Inspired by the clean waters and the support of the Filipino community, the Cobra Philippine Dragon Boat Team snared its first of five gold medal prospects Friday in the World Championships at the Seddon Channel here.
The small contingent, sent to the competitions in the last minute after managing to scrounge support from the private sector, claimed the men’s small-boat 1,000 meters in world record fashion, beating Australia and Hungary for the title.
The Filipinos’ clocked a world record of 4:57.13 to claim the gold. Australia won the silver medal (5:00.09), while Hungary captured the bronze (5:03.71) in the biennial meet.

maybe because they are not as handsome as the Fil-ams of philippine azkals? thats why our government dumped them like garbage. I hope they can win more gold medals, so that they can shove it on Jose "Peping" Cojuangco( Philippine Olympic Committee head) and Richie Garcia (the Philippine Sports Commission chairman) a$$es...

Congratulations, well yeah I feel for these pals who trained hard but for some unknown reasons were not provided financial support by our gov't. I've seen some clips on ABS-CBN (am not sure if it was Krusada) that these pals were training at manila bay and eating tahong as their meal and one of the sad things about it all is that they only have 1 apartment that all of em are sharing.

Geez. That's why as noted on the reports nights ago, one of em said "it was because of tahong" that they won. I just hope that they will get credit as to what they truly deserve. They've proven enough of their worth. Hats off to Philippine Dragon Boat team.

Why can't I hear the loud cheers, the hype and the trending topic in twitter on this one? How about a commercial or some loudmouth Boy Abunda interview?

I believe most team members, if not all, are Phil. Navy servicemen. Explains their discipline & focus.

If this so the case, why don't the gov't make more athletes out of soldiers?

An animated crowd of Filipinos residing in the Tampa Bay area have shown up to cheer on the team during their races, a big turnaround from the almost zero attention they got back home from sports officials and the general public.
