Razer announces the Electra headset for phones and more by VR-Zone.com
If you've been trying to find a pair of cans that will work with both your phone and your PC, Razer might have what you've been looking for in its new Electra headset which is set to launch in October. The new headset comes with a pair of detachable cables, one for regular use and one for use with mobile phones as well as some notebooks that use a single jack for both the headphones and the microphone.
The Electra headset is sure to draw some unwanted attention, as its green and black design makes it stand out from your average headphones, although we have a feeling that this was intentional. Feature wise we're looking at replaceable leatherette (read synthetic leather) ear cushions, ear cups with a "snug fit" and enhanced bass response. The cables are rubber sheathed, although we're not quite sure how this is different from other headphone cables.
What makes the Electra headset different from most other headsets is that it comes with a cable specifically for mobile phone use that sports a built-in microphone, as well as a regular cable without the mic. The idea is that you use the microphone cable with your phone, tablet or notebook/netbook, well, at least as long as your device features a connector with support for combined 3.5mm audio and mic jacks. Razer claims compatibility with Apple devices and HTC and BlackBerry handsets. The cables connect to the headphone part via a standard 3.5mm jack.
The whole swappable audio cable is a pretty neat idea, although we're not sure why you need two difference cables, as it's not as if devices with a standard 3.5mm won't accept the cable with the microphone. We also feel that Razer missed a trick here, as the headset can't be used as a headset with a desktop PC or most notebooks due to lack of adaptor from the single headphone/mic plug to two separate plugs. At US$59.99 this isn't a terribly expensive headset, especially not from Razer, but it's missing at least one trick that should've been included.
