well ddr3 is more faster in terms of data processing than ddr2. its better to buy ddr3 if your mobo supports ddr3 v.c.

DDR2 and DDR3 are memory speed. DDR3 is faster than DDR2, it is sort of bus frequency bracket. DDR is up to 400 Mhz, DDR2 is 400Mhz to 1066 MHZ i think (I'm not sure) , DDR3 is the next bracket and so on and so forth. But keep in mind that what is important in Video Card is the GPU(Graphics Processor Unit). This is the video card processor, this is the heart of the graphic card. All pcie slot is capable of high frequency bus, i don't know its limitations. You better check your motherboard manual to be sure of its limitation, But i don't see any memory bus frequency limitation with mine. The higher the video card, the better GPU it has. But remember that all geforce 7900(G71) cards has the same GPU(G71), it only matters with the amount of memory it has, the core speed and the memory speed. As well as with radeon 1900(R580) cards and so on and so forth.

    e.g. (reference cards)

7900 gt has 250mb of memory, 450Mhz core speed with 660Mhz memory speed.
7900gtx has 512Mb of memory, 650Mhz core speed with 800Mhz memory speed.

That is the reason why overclockers will settle with 7900gt coz the card is capable to higher frequency comparable to 7900gtx.
It is very economical to have 7900gt then overclock to 7900gtx speeds or higher. Just buy a good vcard cooler.
