Default AMD A-Series APU Smashes IGP Performance Records...Surprise

Armed with a Radeon HD 6550D graphics core that has 400 stream processors, 8 ROPs, and full DirectX 11 support, AMD A-Series "Llano" accelerated processing unit (APU) was tested to be the fastest integrated graphics solution to date. The tests was run by a forum-member of TweakTown community with early access to engineering samples. On the test-bed was AMD A8-3850 APU, which has four x86-64 cores clocked at 2.90 GHz, and the Radeon HD 6550D IGP with engine clock of 600 MHz. Standard dual-channel DDR3-1333 MHz memory was used, even though the APU supports faster DDR3-1866 MHz. To seat the test bed, Gigabyte A75M-UD2H was used. It's important to note here that the CPU cores were overclocked to 3.773 GHz (145.13 MHz x 26.0), with an insane core voltage of 1.52V.

The setup was put though three generations of 3DMark benchmark, covering DirectX 9.0c, DirectX 10, and DirectX 11 performance. In 3DMark 06, the setup scores 10,492 points. In 3DMark Vantage, it scored P6160 (performance preset, validation). In 3DMark 11, it scored P1591 (performance preset, validation). More details can be read in the screenshots.

Cpu score in 3DMark06 is descent considering it's only oc'ed at 3.7ghz if we'll compare it to an Athlon II X4 oc'ed at the same speeds for e.g. But this was suppose to be a new architecture. And it needs 1.52v to achieve an 800mhz increment? If you're buying this for its cpu performance then you're not getting what you paid for. If you're buying this for its cpu and gpu performance then this would an amazing choice.

    AMD's A-series of Fusion APU's finally launches

Although we expected AMD to announce its A-series of APU's first at Computex and then at E3, it seems like we've finally gotten there as today is D-day uhm, A-day(?). AMD has launched no less seven mobile parts today, although so far the desktop models have as yet to make an official appearance.

The specifications leaked yesterday, courtesy of none other than AMD itself, but specs alone doesn't tell the whole story. AMD's APUs have been a long time coming and the really big question is if they'll live up to everyone's expectations. AMD is making some bold claims, least not in terms of battery life where the company is promising up to 10.5h of usable battery life. In fact, AMD claims that its A8-3510MX APU has 3.5h better battery life than a similar notebook with Intel's Core i5-2401M processor.

Where we don't doubt AMD is when it comes to graphics performance, as the company has always had a huge lead here over Intel, but AMD has thrown in a few new features that should further boost the appeal of its APUs. First up AMD has added what the company called Perfect Picture HD which is a post-processing option for cleaning up 1080p video, a feature that might prove popular with people shooting their on HD home videos. The second feature, called Steady Video is rather quite impressive though as you can see in the video below from Engadget, it actually pre and post processes the video to reduce camera shake and it even works with online videos.

As always, AMD is being very competitive on price and the company is expect notebook with its new APU's to start at US$499 with an A4 APU, whereas with an A6 we're looking at around US$599 and finally A8 models will come in at around US$699. Of course these are best case scenarios and we'd expect a lot more expensive machine to be available as well, depending on configuration. For those looking for a boost to the graphics performance beyond the APU's integrated solution, AMD supports CrossFire on the platform and claim up to a 75 percent performance boost for its discrete mobile GPUs when pairing them up with an APU. We're going to have to hold off on making any judgements until we get some units in for review, but at least on paper it looks like AMD could have a real winner on its hands here.
