antimatter and matter should have been produced in equal amounts during the Big Bang that created the universe 13.6 billion years ago.

The existence of antimatter was first predicted by British scientist, Paul Dirac, in 1928. Today, we know antimatter exists, because we can find traces of it in cosmic rays and scientists have trapped tiny amounts of it in particle accelerators.

The theory goes that equal amounts of matter and antimatter were created in the Big Bang. But something happened within that first minute (scientists don't know what) to shift the balance in favor of matter. And those leftovers went on to form the universe we have today.

As to why there was an imbalance between matter and antimatter, that's one of the biggest mysteries in science.

A Nobel Prize awaits those who can give the answer...of course that has to be backed up by evidence, math, peer reviews, etc.

In the roots of fundamental physics, there is really no distinction between anti-matter and normal matter that we know. It just turned out that the other antisymmetric particles in terms of wavefunction (Quantum Theory). In the beginning of the early universe, everything was pure energy so there was no matter or anti-matter. As OBSERVER pointed, the imbalance which came out later is still a mystery but crucial to the formation of our known universe.

Also, I would credit Paul Dirac as Theoretical Physicist. Of course, he is a scientist as well.

Anti-matter doesn't produce energy but anti-matter interacting with normal matter will produce lots of energy. There probably exists a mirror image of our universe that is exactly the same as ours only that their normal matter is our anti-matter and vice versa for us.
