A PROPOSAL to permanently close parts of historic Colon Street and its connecting roads to vehicular traffic so the closed areas can be converted into a tourism zone is being explored by the Cebu City Council.

Councilor Hilario Davide III said this would reduce vehicular traffic downtown and give sidewalk vendors a legitimate area to sell their goods without causing inconvenience to the public, who use the sidewalk.

nice proposal...it's about time to get rid of those vendors that are crowding our promenade and be put somewhere else...since birth, i remember the place as really infested of all sorts..

i agree on the proposal to make it more of an attraction and a business park of sort just like in developing countries. but it has to come with a good face-lifting and improvements to make it more vaiable and attractive to tourists and businessmen alike.

... yaay, Colon is the "heart" of the jeepney routes. I hope they will plan this well.... Colon is the oldest street in the philippines.

its a good idea but many businessmen will not in favor of it. 1 of those is columnist Bobit Avila. Mawad-an daw sila costumer.

Also, closing down a road? I'm all for making the oldest street in the Philippines into a tourist hotspot but close down the road? Probably re-route any public utility vehicle (including the pesky taxis). We can't afford to close down the roads in Cebu. Our traffic is so dense that closing down a major road would most certainly cause a choking point and clog up our already troubled traffic system.
this is the line --------- cross it. i dare you

colon has its own historical significance and can possibly lure tourists... but the City should plan this well or else gain another criticisms from scant minority..

I hope this will not increase prostitution in the area....

...That junction of Metro Gaisano and Oriente is the unofficial "center" of traffic and almost all of the jeepney routes pass thru there. This will be a very big undertaking but if they would close down, where would the 06 routes go?? The 10's and 09's ?? the 01 and 02 ?? the 03 and 04 ??
