Thumbs up MERGED: FEDERAL DEMOCRACY: A solution to the sick country, the Philippines.

    What is your opinion?

Federalism is a system of government in which power is divided between a central authority and constituent political units (like states or provinces). One example of this is the United States and the division of power between the national government and the state governments.

Here in the Philippines, 90% of the income of the provinces goes to National government or Manila. But with the form of government like the United States its up to the provinces or states how much they will share to the National government. With this, the states can focus to improve their own localities. I think this is an excellent type of government set-up unlike our present condition.

    ADVANTAGES:
1.Federal unity but local governments handle local problems
2.Local government/officials have to be responsive to people who elect them
3.Central government can devote more time and energy to national and international problems
4.More opportunities for participation in making decisions – in influencing what is taught in the schools and in deciding where highways and government projects are to be built

    DISADVANTAGES:
    1.Duplication of services
2.Citizens living in different parts of the country will be treated differently, not only in spending programs, such as welfare, but in legal systems that assign in different places different penalties to similar offenses or that differentially enforce ci
    3.Disputes over power/national supremacy versus state’s rights
4.International relations – states may pass laws that counter national policy

Federalism will only work if there is a very strong central government, which i believe we cannot have...

and oh.. how does it differ from our present government? if we are still going to have the same politicians running the situation..

Bai grey, pwede og posible man jd mahimo ang Pinas nga usa ka federal pero, as what the other poster here stated, we needed a strong central government. Dili ingon ana kasayon kay ang uban nga region sa Pinas, dili ka compete sa uban, gawas lang kung ang uban nga region prehas ka (not too industrialzed as) Cebu or Manila...
Naa pa man ta agricultural nga region, so what must our govt himoon unta, ilaha unta ning palamboon, ang atong nasud dili pa maka suport para ma industrialized ta kay backward economy pa man ta, SO pasabot ani, agricultural pata, then i maximize unta ang focus sa govt sa agri, para makahimo ta ug mga industry nga mosupport sa basic needs para modagan ang usa ka nasud.
