Ringworm or tinea, is a fungal infection growing on the outer layers of the skin, scalp, and/or nails. Athlete's foot and "jock itch" are actually localized forms of ringworm. Other favored sites of fungal infection are the palms and soles, nails, scalp, beard, and trunk.

Fungal infections are rapidly spread from one person to another or even from the family pet to the family. They recur often, and when they do, they have to be treated again.

Fungal infections on the body usually start as itchy, slightly scaly, round red spots on the skin. As the lesions grow, they heal from the inside of the round circle out, giving the rash its characteristic ringlike appearance. The infection often spreads from one area of the body to another. If your groin is involved, there is usually a diffuse red, scaling rash that is very itchy. If you have tinea of your palms or feet, they often scale and are red and may blister, but do not usually form separate small spots. Nail infections appear as areas of yellowish or whitish discoloration and crumbling. Scalp infection with ringworm produces red, itchy scaling and, later, hair loss and breakage.

Doctors confirm a diagnosis of tinea by looking at some of the skin scales under a microscope to see if fungal bodies are present. Generally, treatment is very effective and relatively quick, and there are many good options. Therapy takes longer if the fungi have been invading the scalp, fingernails, or toenails for some time.

    Prevention & Treatment for Ringworm:

This should be obvious, but if you don't want to get ringworm, don't share personal items. Keep your towels, socks, underwear, and other unmentionables to yourself. Keep cool, dry, and clean to avoid a ringworm infection. Yes, because it's a fungal infection, ringworm can be avoided by staying clean and dry. Don't wear heavy clothing that doesn't breathe well for very long, and whatever you do, don't forget to wear flip-flops in the shower if you live in a dormatory.
Ringworm thrives in warm, humid places, so it's best to avoid them or at least protect yourself if you can't avoid them. Oh, and wash your hands!

Lamisil is a common antifungal cream used to get rid of ringworm. You've seen the commercials. Thank the lord we have things like antifungal creams. As I mentioned before, ringworm, or the fungus that causes it, is quite closely related to athlete's foot. Thus, anything that will cure the tinea that causes athlete's foot should cure your average ringworm infection.

Monistat-Derm is another common antifungal topical lotion used to cure ringworm. Unbeknownst to a majority of men, Monistat isn't just for vaginas anymore. Monistat actually makes a pretty good antifungal skin cream that can help wipe out a ringworm infection in less than three weeks. It is suggested that any over-the-counter topical antifungal medicine be applied to the rash 2 times a day for at least 3 weeks to ensure adequate
