Couldnt have said it any better bai Carl. The images really illustrates the diff. between ref n non-ref cards. I bet the non-ref below is cooler by a few degrees kysa reference above.

That covers the cooling, but for the PCB almost always the non reference model is better like MSI's "Military Grade" spec components in their videocards allowing better overclocking and such.

yep. sometimes the board design is changed altogether such as cards done by Gainward where the software needed for their cards are proprietary.
