Marvel Comics kills off the Human Torch: No more ‘Fantastic Four’

According to a startling report issued by the Associated Press on January 25, 2011, Marvel Comics is dismantling the fan favorite Fantastic Four by killing off the Human Torch.
Comic book enthusiasts soon became irate after hearing the drastic change to superhero mythology.
“If they were going to kill off one of the Fantastic Four, it wouldn’t be the Fantastic Four anymore,” explained comic book collector Ben Czeladnicki while visiting Midtown Comics’ Time Square location in New York City.
Tom Brevoort, Marvel’s senior vice president for publishing, asserts that Marvel did not set out to kill the Human Torch, but in doing so he realizes many fans will be angry. The news is said to bring forth backlash, but that is exactly what Brevoort is hoping for.
“The worst thing that we could have when our books come out … our stories come out is deafening silence,” declared Brevoort in an exclusive interview with the Associated Press.
There is no question that "Marvel's First Family" helped start the modern age of comics, a time when superheroes confronted real-life adversities aside from crime fighting. It has been nearly 50 years since the first issue hit stands back in 1961, and now one of the characters that helped define a literary era is going to die.
This story will most likely put the Fantastic Four back in the center of the Marvel Universe, paving the way for a groundbreaking chapter in superhero mythology.
Fantastic Four (1997) #587 arrives in stores everywhere on January 26, 2011.
