CATBALOGAN, Samar -- The newly formed anti-corruption group called the Multi-sectored Alliance for Transparency and Accountability in Samar (MATA-Samar) are now tracking down all kinds of government projects of this province.
The MATA-Samar, one of the only two local transparency reporting groups in the Philippines established by the Manila-based Philippine Public Transparency Reporting Project (PPTRP), is now closely monitoring the on-going projects of the provincial government which is said to be amounting to P274, 106,000 or USD 6.2 million and set to be implement by the government in clusters and in lump sum appropriations.
Also under watch by the group is the supposed US-funded construction and rehabilitation of Samar and Eastern Samar national highways.
To recall, an amount of $434 million grant was approved to the Philippines through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) and huge part of this amount was allotted to build better roads connecting the two provinces aimed to improve the living conditions of the farmers and fisher folks and to put an end to the insurgency problem of this country’s third largest island.
