MANILA, Philippines — Members of the PAL Employees Association (PALEA) and the Party Manggagawa on Tuesday staged a rally in San Juan City against Alliance of Volunteer Educators partylist Rep. Eulogio Magsaysay.
The rally was in support of PALEA member Sarah Ocampo, a PAL ground attendant, who said she plans to file criminal and civil cases against Magsaysay over alleged insults she received from the party-list representative in an altercation at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) last month.
Meanwhile, with a looming threat of an ethics complaint against him, Magsaysay on Wednesday apologized for his misconduct when he allegedly abused an employee of the Philippine Airlines (PAL) verbally last month.
Two protest groups merged in front of Club Filipino and tried to rally in front of Magsaysay's home along Eisenhower Street at around 11 a.m.
In a press statement, PALEA Women Committee Head Genalyn Licayan condemned Magsaysay’s supposed threats and sexist remarks against Ocampo.
“We would like to seek justice for all aviation workers who are constantly experiencing disrespect and abuse from airline customers, especially abusive politicians and government officials, but have chosen to remain silent for fear of reprisal,” Licayan said.
“We cannot continue to allow government officials to use their position in maligning workers, especially those who undermine women workers’ right to be free from discrimination and sexism,” she said.
She claimed Magsaysay, shouted derogatory remarks including “menopausal bitch” at Ocampo in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport just before he departed the boarding area.
Partido ng Manggagawa (PM) Secretary General Judy Ann Miranda said they are also supporting Ocampo’s case.
“Government officials, especially the likes of Mr. Magsaysay should realize that workers are human beings who deserve respect. It is truly an embarrassment that a number of ‘public servants’ in our country do not know how to conduct themselves accordingly,” Miranda said.
Ocampo claimed that Magsaysay called her a “menopausal bitch, bitch, bitch” after the ground attendant failed to accommodate the lawmaker’s request of being seated next to his son in a flight bound for Los Angeles in California on December 17, 2010.
“First of all, I would like to tell your readers that I am seeking forgiveness for my harsh words. But I would like everyone to know why it reached that point. It all started when I requested that I be seated beside my son in business class,” Magsaysay said in a phone interview.
“First, she was the one who raised her voice at me. But it was only later I realized that she had a high pitched voice. I thought she was just shouting at me,” the partylist legislator added.
Magsaysay also denied that he was looking sternly at Ocampo, which made the PAL employee uncomfortable and confronted him, noting that “that was when I said those words.”
“It’s up to her but I feel that it is my family who has been maltreated,” he stressed, adding that the scene did not reach the point that he has to introduce himself as a congressman.
