Default PS3 Jailbreak... yes? or no?

    Hello PS3 owners out there,

there has been a wide spread of PS3 jailbreak USB dongles in the market,
this will in able your PS3 consoles play Blu-ray games without the disc itself, you can just back-up
(via jalibreak software) it into the PS3 HDD and voila! PLay all you want with less cost.

what's your say on this, do you support jailbreak PS3 or not,
does anyone know the pro's and cons of using the jailbreak?

    kumbati!

I support anything that breaks the control of big companies over something you bought with your own money. I do not support piracy which is what this ultimately means.

    Pros and Cons

    What does PSN offer?

I suppose we can split this into:

    1. Free Online gaming.
    2. Downloads.
    3. Apps in some regions which require PSN (for example in the UK - I can't speak for anyone else - we have one that lets you stream music videos)

Online gaming does what it says on the tin.

Downloads (DLC expansions for games, full games, demos, themes, backgrounds, et al) subdivides into free and paid for).

If you don't have PSN access you will lose these things but please see the following notes:

    1. You will still be able to play online via free VPN services that allow you to use 'system link' features in many games. For example Xlink Kai. Expect these services to grow massively in popularity due to PS3 jailbreaking. It's not the same as PSN. You will lose some features and not all games have system link.

    2. There is a program which can download content form the PSN store for you and transfer it to your PS3. I don't think it works with paid content but I may well be wrong (feel free to correct me anyone who has explored this). Also this works at time of writing. Who knows what the future holds?

On the balance I'd say running backups is worth it but I do miss online play. However remember that you can always upgrade firmwares (that said if sony figures out a way of detecting us you may still end up being banned from PSN in the longrun) even after upgrading. None of us have crystal balls so we can't tell what will happen.

    The advantages of jailbreaking are:

    1. Backups
    2. Homebrew (emulators, apps etc) - These are comming out quite quickly but still in their infancy (give it time!)
    3. OtherOS - Given AsbestOS and the possiblity which has opened up today that we might be able to use firmware emulation of 3.01 firmware installing
linux (something sony robbed form fat customers over the Geohotz episode) is highly likely to be back and if someone can figure it out
(which we can be cautiously optimistic about) we might get it running with GameOS priviliages (i.e freed of the restrictions sony placed on it
    - read supercomputer). Furthermore given AsbestOS appears to be running on the slim we are looking at enabling OtherOS even on the slim!

As a side note I should point out that amongst the emulators being worked on is a port of a PS2 emulator which might finally enable everyone to enjoy backwards compatability!

Other (non PSN) advantages to updating:

Ability to play bluerays and games on which sony will be likely to demand that the firmware be updated before playing them. (but this may well be patched or circumvented - at this stage we can't say).
Whatever new features sony come out with - the latest is 3D blueray compatability (but you need a £1800 TV set to use it anyway - 3D games are already compatibile on 3.41 I believe)

    Disadvantages to updating:

    1. Serious USB device clampdowns. Many external peripherals (including popular controlpads) will nolonger work - Given I've got *three* controlpads that would cease to function I'm not keen to try this!
    2. None of the benefits described under jailbreaking.

While no1 can say for sure whether CFW (either true or emulated) will come out progress is definately being made in that direction with every passing day. CFW may usher in a time when we regain PSN access. However this is likely to begin a cat and mouse ban-game.

It's really far too early for us to have answers to many questions.

For ko ani. Gipa jailbreak gani nako akong PS3, so far okay kaayo. it also cost less kai orig CDs cost around 2-3k, or even more. Since crisis man jud ang pinas, mao na ang maayo na option for me, besides wa man sad ko nag gukod sa online features ani. If you want to save, then jailbreak is for you. Practical lang jud siya.

    i have some questions:

    1. wat can AsbestOs do diay? ug unsa man diay mga benefits kung installan og OS or other OS ang PS3 like Linux?
    2. i need some clarifications on this: makaduwa ka og online multiplayer (say COD) kung jailbroken na imong PS3? by or by not using the original disc?
    3. reversible pa ba ni? or once jailbroken na dli na ka makaupdate?

On your first two questions, wala koi nahibaw-an ani. Sorry.

For your third question, yes, you can still update your PS3 if you like, but I don't think you can play any more jailbroken games. I'm using a USB na it let's you play jailbroken games, naa ra na sa emall sa Neo Galaxy. Without the USB, di ka kaabli sa imong games na gipangdownload nga para jailbreak only.

If you wanna play online then remove your USB dongle and if you just wanna play some offline games that your not sure if its worth the money then JB all the way.
