Report: Elder Scrolls V Coming Soon

It's been four years since Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion took RPGers on an epic adventure, but according to a new report, fans won't be waiting much longer for Bethesda to unveil the fifth game in the franchise.

Eurogamer, citing its Denmark editor-in-chief who spoke with an unnamed source close to Bethesda, reports that Elder Scrolls V is now in the works and it's a direct sequel to Oblivion.

"The sequel to Oblivion is coming, we can hereby confirm without hesitation. It's been a while since 2006, hasn't it?" Eurogamer reports.

"This source not only confirmed that the game is in current production, but also spoke briefly about the content -- with fantasy-sounding phrases like Dragon Lord, something with The Blades -- and that voice acting for the characters in the game is currently happening in the weeks to follow."

"The same source confirmed, with official game documents in hand, that this will be the chronological sequel to what happened in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, which is the latest game in the now 16-years-old Elder Scrolls saga and by itself one of the better RPGs for PC and consoles."

Eurogamer goes on to state that Elder Scrolls V has been in development for two years and Bethesda plans to make an official announcement about the game "soon."

Why Elder Scrolls V Shouldn't Be On This Generation Of Consoles

There’s a new Elder Scrolls on the way! The rumours had been growing and Bethesda finally confirmed that yes, we’ll be playing Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim in our homes before 2011 is out. Cue people dancing and singing in the streets, internet forums declaring a fanboy war ceasefire for the day and voice-actors listing ‘pompous English’ as their primary accent high-fiving each other at continued employment. The announcement at the VGAs was one of those magical moments where we can forget about all the bullshit in the games industry…

…for at least a single paragraph. If there’s one thing Elder Scrolls V’s announcement emphasises, it’s that the oldest of old guard of RPGs will be back. Emphasis on old. None on guard. Because that wouldn’t make sense.

“Aha!” said Bethesda, countering this blog before it even existed. “But there’s a new engine now!” And I kind of scratch my head and rub my chin and make a pondering ‘hmmm’ noise and think, fair enough. Fallout: New Vegas was thrown Obsidian’s way as a stopgap while Bethesda hammers its new engine into shape and prepares Skyrim to be The Greatest Game Of All Time Ever Made Ever EVER, as you’ll likely see most magazines proclaim as the release date nears.

The issue isn’t that Skyrim won’t be good. It will be. It’s not even that Skyrim will be buggy. It will be. The issue is that Skyrim doesn’t belong in this generation of consoles. Oblivion blew away everyone’s expectation of what an RPG should be and should accomplish, rewriting the hierarchy of the entire genre overnight. We suddenly expected more from our games, demanded the same level of ambition from our developers and hoped every game we played would accomplish even a fraction of what Oblivion did. Amongst a sea of mediocre launch titles, which promised much but delivered little (we haven’t forgotten, Perfect Dark), Oblivion was king.

That’s why Skyrim’s place at the dying end of 2011 feels wrong. It should be the opening act for a new dawn of consoles, not the one closing the curtains on this. How much can really be accomplished on this technology anyway? Any multiformat release has to consider Xbox 360’s limitations in mind and that technology is creaking. Epic can conjure all sorts of voodoo magic to make Gears of War 3 look good but will it play like a game that feels as though it’s pushing the technology? Doubtful.

That was Oblivion’s strength – how its gameplay used the new technology available to it. Can Skyrim push the boundaries to the same degree and make as big a difference when its relying on the same technology? Deep down, we all know the answer. If only Bethesda was brave enough to admit it.

Elder Scrolls 5 vs Mass Effect 3

The Spike VGAs, while an absolutely awful awards show, is becoming like a mini-E3 when it comes to game announcements.

If you haven't had a read of our round up of the show's announcements, make sure you do so. Otherwise you'll miss out on the unveiling of The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, Mass Effect 3 and Forza 4, among others.

We're continuing our series of online debates today and we want to know what stood out for you. Was there anything you were hoping to see that didn't appear? Any massive surprises? Which is your favourite announcement from the event and, perhaps more importantly, what were you disappointed by?

Perhaps it was the new look for SSX: Deadly Descents or the lack of promised Gears of War reveals. Maybe you'd actually like to discuss the awards themselves -- is Red Dead Redemption really game of the year? And, seriously, weren't the awards presentations just awful? Who wrote that stuff?

Unlike the writers at Spike, we don't want to put words you'll regret in your mouth. You tell us what you think.
