What will you do if your child, younger brother/sister, nephew/niece as young as 7 years old doesn't participate well in school? Here's his story..
Jich, a 7 year old boy, was always caught in school either talking, laughing, singing, shouting, just to turn away from seatworks. Although he listens during discussions, he refuses to write down notes, assignments and answer his quizes unless the teacher sits beside him and guides him. At home, when asked about his homework he'll gladly bring his notebook to his mom and studies well. The exact opposite of his behavior in school. When reviewed for an exam, his mom would expect him to get a high score coz he was able to answer the review well. Although there is one thing, he complains when asked to read a couple of sentences like instructions and questions much more if he's asked to read a story. When this happens, the battle begins. Now his grades are failing, simply bcoz he doesn't finish answering his quizes and seatworks.
If he was close to you what would you do to help him?

hi, ira_mae. seems to me like he is craving for attention. and i would also like to know about his preschool experiences. how were his preschool years? did he exhibit the same behavior?

i have a preschool and have worked with children for 4 years now.

well, his preschool was better..although he had a difficult time coz he was a transferee. He had a tutor back before the school year started so that he could cope up. He was also behind with the reading and writing in compare to his classmates. Last summer he was enrolled at Global Village for developmental reading and was doing great, his tutor even said that he was really good with memory and comprehension.

the nice thing is that he listens during discussion. he also does his seatwork when a teacher assists him. he studies with his mom. seems like he is not confident enough to do reading and writing tasks on his own. he may not know how to express this difficulty in a positive manner so he acts out--talking, shouting, etc.

you mentioned that he was behind in reading and writing in preschool but was tutored in the summer months. perhaps his level is not yet at par with the performance level in his grade 1 class. he might be experiencing stress from it all--the catching up, the adjustment to grade school.

the best way is to have a conference with his teachers and ask for their assessments and recommendations, create a plan of action together, and track his progress monthly. this may seem hard work at first, but its worth all the effort, coz you don't want the child forming a poor attitude towards learning. the sooner the intervention, the better.

i think the kid had ADHD it's an attention deficit syndrome.......it's when kids can't focus, can't stay still and can't control temper tantrums......he needs medical help.....

thanks for the advices..well, here's another what if this kid is now a 17 yr old student who doesn't go to school inspite all the support..what's the best thing to do?

hello ira. i want to tell you of one someone who didnt want to go to school. natapos na nya ang first year sa college....ang daming bagsak. kakalokah. since sa province sila sa mindanao... malaki gyud gasto pag dito school. .

so wala sya gipa-school. ayaw nya eh di wag...ONE YEAR sya tambay. walang pera masyado kay wala man allowance. he saw his former classmates go to school. na-inggit sya... na-realize nya nga he was getting behind na... so he went back to school. right now he is about to graduate na. tapos na OJT nya with a very good company and i cant be happier for him and his family.

what i am saying is.... find out why ayaw nya go to school... then kung sheer katamaran lang... give him the classified ads... requirement ang COLLEGE DEGREE in i would say 95% of the wanted ads. then back off and let him think for himself. baka naman nakukulitan na ang bata.... ako ra ba kapag kinukulit ako....mas lalo ko di ginagawa ang task at hand.

copy that..perhaps that kid doesn't feel the pressure coz he just broke up with his gf na gikapoy na niya..with or without a gf same ra gihapon as if being in school is a useless thing to do..hope he matures samtang napa mogasto niya..

Diri sa States ang mga teachers ang first gyud mo assess that a child has ADHD. I medicate dayon ang bata, mosamot nuon kabuang while sa atoa sa Pilipinas ang diagnosis ana kay "siaw" lang gyud nga bata or uninterested sa school hehe. Diri tungod walay pasensya ang mga teachers ADHD dayon and sus grabe raba kaayo ang tambal, ingon pa sa among kaila nga pharmacist mura kuno na'g shabu ang ilang tambl i don't really know why she said that pero thinking ba nga bata pa kaayo grabe na kaayo naa nay ingon ana ka grabe nga medication. So please intawn yaw dayon ingon nga ADHD, pasensyaan lang gyud ang bata, he needs to be shown special love and attention.
