Apple, Intel in processor talks

Apple Computer has been in talks that could lead to it using Intel Corp. chips in its Macintosh computers, The Wall Street Journal reported on Monday, reigniting decade-old speculation and sparking a 5 per cent rise in Apple's stock price.

The report, citing two industry executives with knowledge of recent discussions between the companies, said Apple was expected to agree to use Intel chips. But it said the talks could break down or could be a tactic to gain negotiating leverage with Apple's current chip supplier, IBM.

I dont think it will happen, Apple was just trying to send to a message to IBM to hurry up in ramping newer G5 970fx's or the G5 970MP(dualcore). Thats a week after MS and Sony showed off their game consoles that was powered by a derivative of IBM's PowerPC. Apple was pissed.

Besides, MacOSX was written for RISC rather than CISC.

im thinking the same, i think it will never happen.. apple thinks their's just too precious for it.. they always make sure quality over all their products which basically says noone else (cloners) should get a copy of any of their mac oses without buying the whole system..

As i read some of the sites, IBM's Power PC is a Open source architecture which anyone can create a variant. Most likely if this rumor is true, intel would carry the burden of manufacturing Apple's processors. Intel can certainly do that.

Or another theory would be intel could provide Apple with its Itinium line of processors (sounds far fetch but Itiniums are not selling that well compared to Opterons and Intel is desperate to diposed excess inventory or be another variant of it. Itiniums are classified RISC just like IBM's PowerPC, its easier to port MacOSX to new hardware).
