Fader ND II Filter
Netural Density/ND filter is one of the most common effects filter used by any photographer.
When taking pictures, photographers may want to create different effects (ex. larger aperture, long exposures)
You may need to keep changing filters to find your desired effect.
To solve this problem, the Fader ND II filter was created. It is an adjustable nd filter, the ONLY TRUE fader nd. By just rotating the filter (similar to how a cpl is rotated), you can change the density from ND2 to ND400 (2 to 8 stops)
To avoid vignetting, we use a larger front thread (ex. a 77 mm filter has a 77mm back thread which is attached to the lens and an 82mm front filter thread).

This is a shoot to test the Fader ND, a variable gray filter, to keep the shutter speed at 1/50 and the shutter at 5.6 all the time in bright sunlight. The white balance is a little screwed up in the first 1 minute. It's also a practice to follow focus and zoom at the same time. Pretty hard but I got better as the shoot progressed. I think.
I think the 1/50 gives a good motion flow.

Philip Bloom reviews (phillipbloom.co.uk)

Before I had to compromise on shutter speed or iris to get the exposure I wanter, now I can get it exactly right with 1/60th shutter in and as wide open or closed down as I want more or less. Also the joy is the ability to gently adjust exposure by turning the variable ND wheel on the front of the lens which gives you what is missing from still camera 35mm lenses, smooth exposure change during a shot. With these you can.

Fader ND photo test (flickr.com)
Just trying out my new ND fader filter. Exposure of 2 seconds during the afternoon.
Looks OK to me as no vignetting or colour cast. Filter can be rotated to give exposure reduction from 0 to eight stops. Not sure about the 8 stops, but definately goes to 6 stops.

Fader ND for Wedding photography
A few weeks back, my variable ND filter arrived - from 2-8 stops (near pitch black!) of density. As someone constantly playing with light during sessions, I've found it awesome so far. Samples/info posted here because I know my wedding peeps are the ones who keep asking me about it.
Pros: It's awesome.
Cons: Vignetting/difficult to focus with more stops gobbled up. Not for the n00b of outdoor lighting, as it adds another sometimes confusing variable.
f/2.8 1/180 ISO 100 in broad daylight.
