    Default PSP2 (PlayStation Portable successor)

Perhaps a big announcement will happen at the 2011 E3.

PSP2 Hits Next Fall With Dual Analog Sticks, Touch Pad and Bigger Screen

Around the time of the Tokyo Game Show, Sony held a private meeting at its offices in Tokyo's Aoyama. The purpose was to show off the PSP2.

Several sources have confirmed to Kotaku that the PSP2 does have a previously rumored touch panel on the back of the hardware. The touch panel was described as looking like a big mouse trackpad. When Sony showed the PSP2, it did not provide concrete details regarding how the trackpad will be implemented in games and instead is leaving that to the discretion of game developers.

The screen itself is not only sharper than the current PSP's, but about an inch larger. The larger screen means that the PSP2 will be larger as well. In the private meetings, Sony is touting the screen as "HD".

A larger PSP should not be that big of an issue for Sony — especially in a mobile environment with large tablets like the iPad. It also shows that Sony realizes it is no longer simply competing with Nintendo, but also Apple.

It is unclear whether this is the same handheld described by the Wall Street Journal. According to the paper, Sony is working on a device that mixes a game player, an e-book reader and a netbook computer.

In late September, there were also reports that the PSP2 hardware was in the hands of "numerous" developers.

Currently, the PSP2's hardware is not finalized, and Sony is having problems balancing battery, power and heat. There are apparently overheating issues, but Sony is, of course, aiming to have those issues corrected by the time the hardware is publicly shown.

Sony set the PSP2's goals (what Sony wants it to do), but is still tinkering with the portable's innards. The PSP2's tech specs are expected to change, meaning that things like chip size and processor size are variable.

Sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2's release window is fall 2011. Sony is not yet talking openly about the PSP2.

Sony did not offer a comment in time for publication.

What I want for the PSP2

The PSP is my favorite game system, hands down. Well, actually, hands up. Hands up into my face, as the PSP is always in front of it. But here's the thing: I don't love the PSP for its design as much as I do for its offerings and portability. A portable game system with a nice, big screen and strong graphical capability is all I've ever wanted, and for me, the PSP was the first to deliver that. This little system gives me all of that, plus the ability to play downloaded games, some of my favorite PS1 titles, and store them all on one memory card. For these reasons I almost always have a PSP on my person, and I know that I've played it more than I've ever played my PS3, Xbox 360 or Wii.

For a system that I love so much, and carry around so much, there are a few things I dislike about it. I hate the on/off switch placement so much that my face is red in anger just thinking about it. That analog nub is silly, and there really should be a second one. The UMD drive is slow and the battery life just misses the mark. But instead of trying to mentally rebuild the PSP into what I want, I'd rather start thinking about the PSP2.

There have been plenty of rumors about a second PSP. And I'm not talking about some silly remake or rehash. Please don't make a PSP-4000, Sony. Let's forget about the PSPgo and move on. And are you serious with this PSP phone?

No, let's move on. Here's what I'm wanting for the PSP2. I hope you're listening, Sony.

The Playstation Portable 2, rumored to have dual analog sticks, a bigger screen and touch controls, will also rival the Xbox 360 in processing power and ditch the UMD format, sources tell Kotaku.

Earlier this week multiple sources detailed meetings with Sony during the Tokyo Game Show about the long-rumored PSP2.

In those meetings about the portable, we were told, the device was shown to have a touch panel on the back of the system what looked like a mouse trackpad. The PSP2 also had dual analog sticks and a larger display which Sony touted as being "HD."

While the device was shown in two form-factors, one that looked like the PSPgo (seen above) and one that looked like the PSP, Sony told attendees that they have not yet settled on the final design for the system.

Since breaking the news earlier this week, a few more details have shaken loose about the device, which our sources have verified.

One of the key ones is that the PSP2 will not have a UMD drive. The UMD (Universal Media Disc) was launched in 2004 for use in the PSP. Initially, the format was used for movies, but slow sales of UMD films lead to studios dropping support for the format.

Sony's PSPgo is UMD-free version of the PSP, and sources tell Kotaku that the PSP2 will follow in the footsteps of that portable. Games will be stored on a Memory Stick, according to one source. Though we've also been told that Sony is still puzzling out what the final non-UMD storage solution will be for the PSP2.

We've also learned that the PSP2 will be a much more powerful gaming device with twice the RAM of the Xbox 360.

While we don't yet know all of the portable's system specifications, we have been told that the PSP2 will feature 1 GB of RAM. That's compared to the 64 MB of RAM the PSPgo and PSP 3000 have. Both of those portables use a MIPS R4000 CPU clocked at up to 333 MHz. By comparison the Xbox 360 has 512 MB of RAM and runs a 3.2 GHZ CPU.

The specs for the yet-to-be-released Nintendo 3DS haven't been officially detailed but we've heard it will be as powerful as the Nintendo Wii which features 64 MB of RAM, and a special processor clocked at 729 MHz.

It's starting to sound like someone at Sony is listening to the murmuring about the Playstation Portable and doing something to fix the issues some have with it. Dual analog sticks. No UMD. A bigger screen. More powerful tech. Touch controls. We're not hearing a single thing we don't like so far.

I would not be surprised to see the next PSP in the form of a smartphone.

Why? Because Sony had long wanted to beat both Nintendo (DS) and Apple (iPhone, iPad).

VG247 has obtained the world’s first images of a PSP2 dev kit.

The shots clearly show the device’s forward- and rear-facing cameras, as well as the much-discussed trackpad on the rear of the unit.

Note that this isn’t the console’s final form factor. As you can see, some developers are working with a kit with similar construction to a PSP go at the moment – see the update below – with a sliding screen over physical controls. We don’t know when the final physical spec will be nailed down, only that this isn’t it.

We were first told PSP2 kits were in developers’ hands early this year.

It has an HD screen. The last set of rumours surrounding the handheld said the chipset has yet to be finalised.

The machine is rumoured to be extremely powerful, with approximately twice as much RAM as a 360.

EA has confirmed it’s had “exposure” to the unit, and developer Netherrealm has openly admitted it’s working with a kit.

PSP2 is supposedly heading for release in late 2011.

If you’re in any doubt as to the authenticity of these images, don’t be. It is what it is. Enjoy.

Update: We’ve been told by a source that these images are from the last kit. There’s a newer one, which is a single, non-sliding block. Remember those last Kotaku rumours of the unit overheating? Sony switched back a form like PSP-1000 in order to cool it down.

In a report published by the Wall Street Journal today, Sony Ericsson CEO Bert Nordberg discusses recent rumours regarding a PlayStation smartphone.

Nordberg says: "There's a lot of smoke, and I tell you there must be a fire somewhere. Sony has an extremely strong offering in the gaming market, and that's very interesting."

Last month images leaked to Endgadget sparked speculation about a smartphone being developed that would incorporate Sony’s gaming technology. Though no formal announcement has been made, a Sony executive discussed the potential for such a device in an earnings call following the rumours.

The WSJ report says the new device will likely carry the Sony Ericsson Xperia brand, rather than PlayStation, and Nordberg says he wants to make “noise” with a new product at the Mobile World Congress expo in Barcelona in February. Nordberg says the challenge of launching a smartphone that incorporates a gaming platform is in negotiating licensing issues with game publishers.

He adds that current smartphones with touchscreens aren’t “optimised for gaming”, when asked why the company hasn’t pursued a smartphone with gaming capabilities, he says "I haven't dug into that history, but the future might be brighter."
