PREPARING FOR PBA M Lhuillier-Cebu Niños face two pro teams this weekend, eyes PBA stint next year
With an eye on a stint in the country's most prestigious league, the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA), Cebu's best amateur basketball squad, the multi-titled M. Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-Cebu Niños will first test their mettle once again this weekend when they square off against a pair of PBA squads at the University of San Carlos gym.
The Niños, fresh from their thrilling five-game conquest of the Tournament of the Philippines over bitter rivals, Misamis Oriental, will play host to the recently-crowned PBA Fiesta Conference champions Alaska Aces on Saturday.
The next day, they will battle league MVP James Yap and the rest of the BMEG Derby Ace Llamados still at the same venue. Both matches are scheduled at 5 pm.
According to famed head coach and Cebu City councilor, Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba, they are very optimistic about joining the PBA next year, which coincidentally is the squad's 25th anniversary.
“Dako ug chansa na muapil ang M. Lhuillier sa PBA next season. Interested kaayo ang mga tao and ma-test na ang mga teams karon,” said the affable head coach in a press conference yesterday at the Yayoy's Grill.
He also said, “And as a bonus, 25 years na mi next year so maybe it's the right time, the best time next year to join the professional ranks.”
TESTING THE WATERS
Alcoseba also stated that they will use the upcoming games to gauge their readiness for the next level. They already own two wins against the Aces in their last three games including a 20-point blowout, 75-55, last year. The Niños eked past the Aces, 88-87, in their game last March 14, a game notorious for the career-ending injury that star guard Woodrow Enriquez suffered on that fateful evening. The Aces got back at the Niños, 87-75, in their game several days after which was held in Bogo City. However, the Aces then were backed up by import Diamon Simpson.
Now with the All Filipino conference looming on the horizon, the odds will be just about even between Alaska and the M. Lhuillier squad.
Alaska will boast of the high-flying Cyrus Baguio, a former ace of Southwestern University; spitfire guard LA Tenorio and a huge frontline composed of Tony dela Cruz, Sonny Thoss, Joe Devance, Reynel Hugnatan and Samigue Eman. They will also parade new recruits Bonbon Custodio and draft pick Elmer Espiritu.
Alcoseba also assured fans that the PBA MVP and crowd darling, James Yap, will suit up for the Llamados this Sunday in spite of his recent nasal surgery.
Yap will also be joined by another Yap in Roger Yap, Jr., who suited up for the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJR) in his college years. Also on tap to play for BMEG are Niño Canaleta, Peter June Simon, Ri co Maierhopper and newly acquired guard Jonas Villanueva. BMEG, then known as Purefoods, defeated the Ninos, 73-65, in an exhibition game last year.
