When I was browsing for a certain video, i saw this video in youtube and I was intrigued so I opened it. The documentary was about exposing Rico Blanco's ideas of his compositions and the beats of his songs.
Description:
The Genius Project is focused on the one person that is often tagged as "Musical Genius" by the mass media. The one person that doesnt refute this title. And the one person that time and again, exercised his amazing ability to combine foreign songs into one grand masterpiece of a song. This artist can produce songs in an instant, and each song can be considered as an OPM hit that can rival foreign songs simply because it sounds like a foreign song. Where does this creative artistry come from? This is the subject of our critique/commentary/documentary.
These videos will prove that his style is "NOT" Plagiarism, Piracy or Stealing. Its something else completely different, concealed within the veil of a genius mind.
But that veil is lifted when an essential clue popped out of nowhere. That clue takes the form an ad jingle for Close-up toothpaste. Sona Mohapatra's song:"Paas Aao Na". This song is popular in both India and Southeast Asia. But Unilever Phils decided that Philippines need an english version of the song.
So they hired Rico Banco to edit Mohapatra's song and made a HYBRID song out of it. And this song-writing process gave clarity as to why lahat ng ginagawa ni Rico na songs ay parang tunog pang-international.
Being influenced by a song and being based on a song are two different things.
Being influenced is being compelled, prompted and inspired to create a song.
Being based is using another song's measure, beat, concept, idea, lyrics, timing, progression etc, and juxtoposing these elements to create something new.
