    Default Gov and the environmentalists

    Things are just getting messy.

CEBU Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia challenged environmentalists to subsidize the cost of generating power from renewable energy sources.

Garcia said using solar or wind energy will increase the cost of power to as much as P30 to P50 per kilowatt hour.

The governor asked environmentalists, like lawyer Benjamin Cabrido, if they are willing to subsidize the cost because the government cannot.

“We can't afford to subsidize that at the expense of other social services that we must spend for," she said.

She asked environmentalists to look for a group that can subsidize the cost.

"It is so easy to say that (clean energy) and that's sounds good. Nobody will argue with you about that. Ako, I will not argue with him. But I just hope he can also give us a way by which we may be able to ensure that power cost will be peg at levels that the ordinary household consumer can afford," she told reporters.

hydro power : dako kaau reservoir kinhanlanon (mahal kaau)
solar power : mahal kaa solar panels
wind power : needs a lot of wind turbines for a very small amount of energy generated.

mas maau pa guro mag nuclear nalang ta.. hinlo pa kaau... its very safe actually... kanang radiation thing panghadlok ra na sa mga environmentalists...

the thing here is not simply being green.. we have to balance developments.. whether we like it or not people will always generate pollution.. (carbon footprint).. thats where "SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT" come's in

d ba mahal kaayo ron ang kilowatt per hour sa VECO

That is the problem with environmentalists!!!

They keep on ranting about different forms of renewable energies. But they are not looking at the cost.

Example if a company will put up a wind farm... this company would charge more per kilowatt. because they have to recoup the cost in a specified time period. say in ten years. but their power output is small. the capital cost is high, thus the high power rate per hour.

IF there is a company willing to do a BOT wind farm for 10 years and still sell power at the present rate... then why not?

The capital cost is what makes the rate so high.

I would rather prefer a nuclear plant though.

hydro power: dili ni applicable sa cebu. gamay ra kaayo ta ug land area to make a reservoir. naa ba ta dako na river system?

solar power: convince the building owners to install solar panels to provide SOME of the power requirements of the building. SM and AYALA would be a start! Kay dako kaayo ilang roof decks. Look at google maps.

wind power: hmmm mahal kaayo for such small power output. 7.58MW ang largest capacity. 10MW are still being planned.

    Side note:

Akong cousin-in-law is with greenpeace. Papa retired mining engineer. they were discussing the environmental impact of mining. my cousin was saying that mining destroys the forest, poison the river with chemicals and whatnot. Papa then said... show me a better, environmentally friendly way of extracting minerals and the mines will gladly use it. till them, stop ranting about the environmental cost and start researching on new technologies. because the minerals will be extracted in any way.

my cousin couldn't counter and just shut up.
