Japanese doc says RP's local gov'ts are ill-prepared for bird flu
MANILA -- Preparations at the local level against an avian influenza pandemic are not that effective, a Japanese health expert said.
Dr. Takeshi Kasai, regional adviser of the Communicable Disease Surveillance and Response of the World Health Organization (WHO) said while the central government is doing its best to prepare and contain the "pandemic" if it occurs, the lower or local government units (LGUs) are not doing the same thing.
Kasai attended a multipartite forum on avian influenza held at the Manila Hotel.
He urged the Philippine Government to invest not only on facilities to contain the spread of bird flu but also strengthen the awareness level of the local government in countering emerging infections like the bird flu virus.
