Default Living in a Buddhist temple

In the Philippines, we are used to weekend Catholic recollections. What do you think of months-long retreats like Buddhist temple stays? Recently a Buddhist temple has opened to locals and foreigners for living and studying the Chinese culture, Chan (Zen) meditation and way of life. It's a different kind of trip, becoming popular in the West, involving spirituality, food, personal development, etc. Much like in the theme of Julia Roberts' upcoming movie based on the book "Eat. Pray. Love". But are Filipinos more hesitant to let go and try this kind of experiences? Is it because of our general mindset, value and belief system?

Yuan Thong Temple in Bacolod City is again offering a temple stay/study program. Would you be interested? What would stop you from going?

Somebody sent us a message saying he really wants to join but he is married... Another one is a single mom. Others have opportunities, others do not. We call them causes and conditions in Buddhism...

^many were quite interested when jidao posted the first thread re the same program (in which i am now participating). the hindrances though are family obligations and work commitments. if you have a job it's not easy to get a 3 to 4-month leave (so i quit my job). this is best for those who are not in school or are in between jobs.

re tradition, Fo Guan Shan is Mahayana and is known for Humanistic Buddhism

    Amituofo Everyone,

The first batch must have been a success and that is why Fo Guang Shan Bacolod is opening for the second batch. Hopefully, many will be able to join this as we have more time to inform the public.

Just in case people are wondering, shaving of hair is NOT required. As the picture above and Sol_Itaire's profile photo shows, both of them opted to shave their hair at their own discretion. So in case you love your hair so much, do not let it become a hindrance in joining this program.

It would be nice if Chu Un Temple will have this kind of program. Unfortunately, Chu Un Temple do not have dormitory & meditation room. However, if causes and conditions are right, we may look into a shorter program.
