hmmm... i'm not sure but this is how i understand it... if this statement is applied to love or relationships, then i would be picturing lovers having completely different interests, ideals and lifestyles but still end up loving one another...

i think it means the more different we are, the more we try to understand one another. given that we have the same respect to others as we have of ourselves. when you know and recognize your own uniqueness, you also tend to see and respect how others are different than you. respect is a step to understanding another person. and it's no wonder it's vital in relationships. the more diverse people are in a culture, for example, the more they try to adapt to one another. if you have certain qualities that don't exactly match with that of your partner's, i guess it will be your respect (other than the love) for one another that will see you through.
