    Default Derweze ("Door to Hell")

Once the geologists were drilling for gas. Then suddenly during the drilling they have found an underground cavern, it was so big that all the drilling site with all the equipment and camps got deep deep under the ground. None dared to go down there because the cavern was filled with gas. So they ignited it so that no poisonous gas could come out of the hole, and since then, it’s burning, already for 35 years without any pause. Nobody knows how many tons of excellent gas has been burned for all those years but it just seems to be infinite there.
Sayanga sa gas ani noh? 39 years of burning without pause. Tsk.

Fact one--it wasn't burning in the beginning--the fire was placed there by human beings. Ergo, the source of the fire is NOT supernatural, it is NOT mysterious.

This thread can continue its existence if the posters would concentrate on Derweze as a factual place/occurrence, and not dwell on superstitious/religious inferences. If I see another post pertaining to such matters, I shall close the thread.

Next to capturing the gas, flaring is safer and friendlier to the environment than releasing the methane into
the atmosphere as methane is a relatively potent greenhouse gas with a high global warming potential of 72 (averaged over 20 years) or 25 (averaged over 100 years).
