MANILA, Philippines - (2nd UPDATE) The 23-year-old son of actor Cesar Montano died in an apparent suicide in their home in Quezon City on Friday morning.
Initial police reports said Christian Angelo Manhilot, the actor's son with his first wife, shot himself in the head with a .45 pistol inside their home along Yakal Street, Tivoli Royale subdivision in Barangay Batasan Hills around 6 a.m..
Superintendent Chris Mendoza, commander of the Batasan Police Station, said police investigators could not immediately conclude that it was suicide.
"Puwede nating sabihing suicide pero we will investigate deeper para malaman kung ano ang pangyayari (We can say that it’s suicide, but we will investigate deeper to determine what really happened)," Mendoza said.
The police commander said Manhilot was rushed to Malvar Hospital in Quezon City and was declared dead at 6:40 a.m.. The boy died of a single gunshot wound in the head.
He said that a household helper identified as Alicia Pancho was the one who discovered the victim in the kitchen located on the 2nd floor of the Manhilots house.
Pancho called the police station at the subdivision’s security quarters, the police commander added.
He said crime scene investigators found the boy’s bloodied body slumped in one corner of the kitchen with a .45 pistol by his side.
Aside from the gun, a landline phone and a cellular phone were also found near the boy’s body.
Mendoza said they would start formal investigations as soon as the actor, Cesar Manhilot in real life, arrives.
"Nakausap ko siya through cellphone. Sabi niya parating na siya at hintay hintayin lamang at gusto n'yang malaman ang pangyayari sa kanyang anak (I talked to him over the phone. He asked us to wait for him and he wanted to know what happened to his son)," Mendoza said.
Reports gathered by ABS-CBN News said Montano and his current wife, actress Sunshine Cruz, arrived at the airport from Tagbilaran in Bohol province before 9 a.m..
The couple were already on their way to the hospital on board an airport taxi.
Montano was not home when the incident happened as he was busy campaigning in Bohol.
The incident happened during the kickoff of the campaign for the local elections.
The actor is running for governor of Bohol.
