MANILA, Philippines – Bagumbayan vice presidential bet Bayani Fernando welcomed the negative campaign being planned by some sidewalk vendors groups, saying it would put to rest the issue of peddling on pavements and sidewalks.
Speaking at a weekly media forum in Greenhills, San Juan City, Fernando said the public would be better educated about the use of sidewalks and its limitations.
"It is their (vendors' groups) right (to campaign against me). It would be better so the public would know their true stance on the issue. They should explain why they continue to clog the sidewalks," said Fernando, a former chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority who had intensified the clearing of sidewalks in the metropolis.
He maintained that sidewalks have been designed for pedestrians to walk on and not for vendors to peddle their wares and merchandise on. - By Dennis Carcamo
