Candidates like to have myths surrounding their origins or personality.

Take Erap, who is supposedly para sa mahirap. But he engaged in Bacchanalian excess and flagrant spending while in Malacanang. Hardly the life of anyone who empathizes with the poor.

Even that paragon of virtue Ramon Magsaysay was said to come from humble roots. But no, theirs was a landed clan in Zambales.

Marcos leaned on his war hero image which propelled him to the Senate and ultimately the presidency. But it turned out he was in fact a Japanese collaborator and the large guerilla outfit he said he commanded was non-existent.

Same thing with Villar.
