Default Radeon 5xxx Owners Report Grey Screens/Hangs

A significant amount of ATI users have taken to the AMD user to user forums to complain about grey screens, crashes and colored-striped hangups.

(There's actually countless forums out there with threads like this – including at least 4 threads in our own forums. I'm concentrating on the AMD forums because these guys, between them, have collected nearly 40 pages of possible causes involving everything from Windows, to mobos, to RAM.)
So far it's unclear as to what is causing the problem. Users report that grey, brown or colored stripes/screen appear while playing games, watching movies and in some cases, while idle. The problems seems to be confined to the HD 5xxx series, although there are a couple of mentions of 4xxx cards

The colored stripes problem existed to me after I switched to Windows 7. Never had problems like this with my Vista before. The problem exists whenever I close a game specifically Team Fortress 2. Haven't tried it with any games yet. This must be a problem with Windows 7 or DX11.

And yeah, using Cat 10.1. It's not that bothersome for me since I rarely play games these days (like 30 minutes a day) and it only exists whenever I close the game.

syot, back when vista 64 pa imo gamit, na-try na nimo ang 10.1? I tried the 10.1 sa Vista nako pero moreklamo ang installation na dili ma-install ang audio driver sa HDMI. Dili gyud ingong necessary ang HDMI pero this is bad for those who are using HDMI for their display.

Another problem with the HD 5XXX drivers is that Vista users are unable to tweak around with ATI Overdrive (namely the fan control) bisag 10.1 na ang iring (cat).

I'm not a driver faggot like any other Nvidiot would complain about ATI. But seriously I'm having fun with this card. But for 18w of idle power, this card is a son of a gun
